I can't believe we're egging on a snail

This festive period seems to have been all about the nostalgia, with the TV rammed full of reboots of old gameshow favourites. We’ve seen Wheel of Fortune have a festive edition hosted by Graham Norton and featuring a slightly useless Richard E Grant. We’ve had a revamped Bullseye hosted by Freddie Flintoff and guest appearance from everyone’s favourite dart player Luke Littler. We’ve even had Blankety Blank back with Bradley Walsh at the helm, losing his mind whilst trying to keep control of the chaos.
But the one that I’ve really enjoyed is the return of You Bet, the second episode of which spawned the title of this post. Ministry of Mayhem alumni Stephen Mulhern and Holly Willoughby reunited to host two episodes of this betting gameshow, where regular people make outlandish claims, and the studio audience vote on whether they believe them.
The range of bets is wild - the first episode had a guy balancing a digger, people guessing board games from the sound of tipping them out the box, and some unspeakable acts with a cactus. The second episode had an impressive feat of memory tools on display, as well as a fascinating battle between a delivery courier on his bike and the delivery drone that’s trying to take his job.
I don’t know if it’s just that we all need a break from the modern world and dipping back into our nostalgic past is so much more pleasant, or if there really is a desire for all these old school gameshows to come back, but if there’s more You Bet in the future, then I’m happy to witness it!
