Pop goes the master

It won’t be news to learn that I love a good quiz, and what’s even better than general quizzing? Music quizzes! I love The Hit List when it comes round but a new contender to the quiz throne has arrived in the form of Popmaster TV. Turning a beloved ten minute radio quiz into a successful hour long TV show isn’t an easy task but they’ve done a fantastic job.
Popmaster TV first appeared last year in a slightly odd format of five daily episodes with the winners going on to a grand final, all done and dusted within a week. It’s quiet, sophisticated quizzing, no glitz and glamour, just people doing their best to answer questions plucked from seventy years of music history.
It obviously went down well as the format was extended and tweaked this year. We kicked off with two celebrity specials and then went on to 13 normal episodes before a grand final. A couple of the rounds were changed and the made better, and honestly, it’s so nice. It’s the only thing outside of the Olympics that I’ve been able to watch this year as it takes no concentration on plot, just digging through the memory banks, and it’s like a soothing balm on frazzled nerves… until you can’t remember the name of that artist you love and you want to punch the wall.
The only complaint about this show is that sometimes the people on there are just too smart. If there’s an intros round where they get to buzz in when they recognise the song, the brilliant nerds can get it in two seconds before you’ve even heard anything! It can be frustrating as an armchair quizzer, but equally, it’s incredibly impressive.
The show builds towards a round of Original Popmaster, and the Three in Ten finale - and you can bet your life we pause and have a good discussion about them. For us, it’s more like Three in Three Minutes. Such fun.
The second series has ended now but Ken Bruce’s appeal for contestants at the end gives me hope that it will be back for more. And until then, I’ll be brushing up on my music knowledge!
