Heroes and capes

A still from the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, featuring the main character facing the screen in his Batman outfit

I like a bit of Batman as much as the next person, but there’s no arguing the fact that the character did go through a bit of over-exposure a few years ago. With the huge Christopher Nolan trilogy, and then endless news about who was going to play the character next, it felt like you couldn’t blink without seeing those bat ears sticking up somewhere. So I wasn’t looking for another Batman vehicle, but the new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Prime was surprisingly good.

It’s extremely stylised, with that gothic noir feel of the 40s and 50s - I’m not sure if it’s actually set in that time period but it’s really well done. The stories are ‘villain of the week’ style, with a lot of guest voices - Christina Ricci and McKenna Grace stood out, but throw in a bonus bit of Minnie Driver and you’ve got yourself a show!

The main characters are all there, Batman leading his double life, Alfred (Jason Watkins doing a fabulous job here), various Gordons doing the public good, and several big bads making early appearances - Harley Quinn, Two-Face and Catwoman to name but a few.

I’m not sure how much input he had, but J. J. Abrams has an executive producer role, whilst all the main credit has to go to Bruce Timm who has vast experience of DC animations to draw upon. I’ve not seen a lot of them, so can’t confidently say this is the best yet, but I will settle for heartily recommending it and crossing my fingers for a second series.
