Doctor Who - Hello and goodbye
Published June 23, 2024

Well. Ncuti Gatwa’s first full series outing as the Doctor has drawn to a close and what an adventure it was. I last wrote about everyone’s favourite two-hearted time traveller after the bifurcation event in December which was our first glimpse at the Doctor’s new incarnation.
Since then, the Doctor has been on a Christmas Day adventure which saw him pick up new companion (with a mystery) Ruby Sunday, and the pair of them have travelled near and far, together and apart, to navigate the big bad.
I loved it. Oh, it’s so good to have Russell T Davies back at the helm. The love he has for the show shines through, his dedication to representation and fairness and just plain good storytelling is present throughout. The way he puts little seeds of future plot points throughout is brilliant. This season had the obvious Susan Twist appearing in every episode (although I didn’t spot it but read it), but there’s more. There’s the neighbour, there’s the new people at Unit, there’s the sneaky technique of baddies being overthrown in such a way that they might come back.
Sometimes the episodes can get a bit wordy and this series started out with a lot of babies that I could have happily done without - but there was also the Beatles, Bridgerton, and futuristic Bubble screens. All brilliant.
It helps to have the behind the scenes shows back, as well. Doctor Who: Unleashed gives us all the good backstage gossip of how things are made and thoughts from the actors, but it is the brief conversations with the writers and directors that I find the most interesting. Just a few minutes of why they did what they did can really open up a whole episode, and a whole series.
So this, I think, has been a real success. Ncuti is wonderful, Millie was great although has now been put on pause for a while, and we have another Christmas special to look forward to. There are clearly lots of good things to come, as we already know of new companions and potential guest stars, so as always when it comes to Doctor Who, we just have to watch this space.
