Watchables roundup
Published May 25, 2024

I’ve watched quite a few TV shows recently that I wanted to give a mention of but couldn’t summon up the thoughts for a full blog post - so it seemed sensible to do a roundup of them all in one go.
A Gentleman in Moscow
- Ewan McGregor is legendary in this, fun and serious at just the right moments.
- The way time goes by, the way the story unfolds, the pacing of it is just perfect.
- It’s such a weird concept of a story and good to learn a bit more about that time, where tension is high and you can trust no one.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz
- I wasn’t sure I was going to watch past the first episode of this but ended up viewing the entire heartbreaking thing.
- Melanie Lynskey is not well served in this, the character is neither interesting nor sympathetic. It shouldn’t be about this character, obviously, but then not sure why she’s included at all.
- It still amazes me that they found each other in the end, as I said in the book review (which I read having watched this adaptation).
Palm Royale
- Kristen Wiig is brilliant in this, always loved her and she does a great job of portraying a really scatty character who’s motivations are all over the place.
- Great cast all round, terrible people doing terrible things mostly but very enjoyable.
- It felt like it lost its way a bit, or went too far down the silliness road, with the whale and the astronaut.
- Disappointed that it ended on an absolute mammoth cliffhanger, I don’t mind the odd dangling thread but there has to be a second series of this or the story is not finished.
Manhunt
- Less to say about this one, it was good TV and well made. Looked very atmospheric and I’m assuming authentic.
- I really enjoyed Tobias Menzies in the main role.
- The constant time switching was baffling, made it quite hard to follow especially at first.
Constellation
- This was so good and SO tense, quite scary in places. Those moments when she’s up in space by herself, shivers.
- Very good effort to show and tell some really complicated ideas.
- I do worry about the twins playing the little girl, this was some mindbending stuff to be portraying.
- This was a relatively satisfying ending but am a bit disappointed it has been cancelled.
