I’ve forged ahead and watched a lot of Trying episodes in an effort to finish my rewatch before the fourth season begins. I really can’t express how much I love this show, and how much I relate to Nikki. I found the last few episodes of the first series were lighter on hilarious quotes though, as the drama ramped up a bit, so I have gathered together three episodes in one here.

Episode 6

Nikki doing her grumpy old man voice:

Nikki: I know you think you’re this straight-talking, tell-it-like-it-is guy, but sometimes it does veer into grumpy old man.

Jason: Are you being serious?

Nikki: “The modern world.” “Why are there so many different bins now?” “When did police sirens get so loud?” “Why does no one know how to read maps anymore?”

Jason: I stand by all of that. Bins are out of control.

Talking to other potential adopters:

Nikki: I’ve sort of withdrawn from the new parents I know. I mean, I love them… but oh my god, the photos. It’s like, I know what your baby looks like, it looks like a baby. I don’t need to come over. I’ll just imagine a baby, it’ll look like that.

Hanging out with younger people:

Guy: Look, I’m just trying to go everywhere and do everything dude, aren’t you?

Jason: I’m old. So, I can do about three things and then I get really tired afterwards.

Episode 7

Nikki groggily wakes up to see Jason returning from outside.

Nikki: What’s going on?

Jason: Been running.

Nikki: Why? What’s happened?

Jason: Nothing’s happened, just been running.

Nikki: I don’t understand, is someone chasing you?

Family get togethers:

Nikki: Go and talk to mum, please.

Karen: Why?

Nikki: Because it’s really quiet, it’s not going how I hoped.

Karen: It’s fine, it’s going well.

Nikki: Karen, there’s no flow. Parties, they have to have flow.

Karen: It’s a party? Oh okay then, no, it’s not going well.

And not specific quotes but I love these moments:

• Our first real view of Jason’s dad fixing things. Love him.
• Nikki rage-filling the wine glass right to the top.
• Measuring Jason’s head on some scales.

Episode 8

Penny steals every scene she’s in:

Penny: Ah, you’re already here, how annoying. I’m so sorry I’m late. The bus timetable is largely a work of fiction at this point.

Cleaning up your social media presence to make a good impression:

Nikki: Did you delete everything?

Jason: Yea.

Nikki: The whole account?

Jason: All of it, yeah. Gone dark. North Korea’d the lot.

So inspirational:

Penny: Okay, just listen to me. You are neither a dog with wheels for back legs nor married to my sister so I have no pity for you. So, you pick yourself up and slap on a smile because it’s not over until it’s over.

And slightly less inspo but still adorable:

Karen: I know he’s not Brad Pitt but… you know, you start off dreaming of this perfect love that’s going to lift you up and make your heart beat and your head hurt and then… you end up just wanting someone to go to lunch with.
