Lisa's farm

If you had asked anyone a few years ago who would be shining the best light on what a brutal and thankless job farming is, who would have put their hands up and said Jeremy Clarkson? The guy continues to cause controversy but when it comes to this programme, he’s got it right. Showing the heart and soul of the farming world, the community, the animals, the care and the love that go into making this a vocation. It’s just perfect.
Series three of the show saw a division in camp - Clarkson had been put off by the vagaries of British weather and wanted to turn his attention to other avenues of money-making, whilst Kaleb was promoted to farm manager to keep up the usual crop ploughing and harvesting that has been the mainstay of the land for such a long time. It was a really interesting idea and completely eye-opening.
Along the way, it allowed for battles between the two head honchos, and there was plenty of silliness - Clarkson using a Henry hoover to pick blackberries is not an image I’ll quickly forget - but there was also some serious drama unfolding. The realities of pig farming took the world by storm a little bit, how heartbroken Clarkson was by the deaths of so many pigs. It does seem like a stupid animal that will squash its own offspring. And the impact the changes in weather patterns have on making decisions and getting the best crop out of the ground at the right time, these can be costly decisions and you have next to zero control over what is going to happen at the end.
For me, though, the winner and true star of the show was Lisa. Previously she’s been a supportive figure, running the farm shop, and commiserating about how stupid the council decisions have been. This time, she was everywhere and doing a great job at every turn. She was literally getting stuck in with the pigs, she was driving all manner of machinery when they were buidling the car park, and she was constantly telling Jeremy that his pricing was no good. A maths lesson for everyone on the farm might be a good idea. I honestly think she ruled the season this time, and we should be renaming the show.
I can’t wait to see what happens in series four, which is currently underway, as the weather has been no better and the industry continues to struggle. It’s brutal but necessary and I can only thank everyone involved for highlighting the issues in such an entertaining way. Long may Lisa’s Farm reign!
