Strictly Come Dancing 2023, Week 11 thoughts
Published December 5, 2023

So close to the end now and the show descends into chaos! We were all really looking forward to five brilliant dances on Musicals week that would then send four couples through to the semi finals, only to find that Nigel injured himself and couldn’t perform. This late in the day, that means he’s out of the competition!
There are contingencies in place for this, of course, and instead of someone else leaving the competition this week, there would be no public vote, these four couples go through to the semi finals and the judges scores roll over. Disappointing but still, musicals - hooray!
Also, WHAT was Tom Hiddleston doing in the audience??
Ellie & Vito - Quickstep (Beauty & the Beast)
Vito as Gaston is legendary. Good dance, but sort of felt she didn’t have as much confidence as normal. Danced with lots of other people though, she’s very good at that. Craig, what is polka-ry? Great comments.
Annabel & Johannes - Foxtrot (Wicked)
Looked graceful, good storytelling but it’s a pretty boring dance all things considered. Not sure about the technique as there was a bit too much dry ice. Great comments from Craig, hadn’t realised she was the only non-actor left! Highest scoring foxtrot of the series is brilliant!
Layton & Nikita - Paso Doble (Moulin Rouge)
I don’t like Moulin Rouge so not looking forward to this one. It feels very odd as a paso doble, doesn’t seem to have quite the right feel, even with taking a different take on it. Good passion and intensity though. Was a bit worried about his pigeon toes but Craig didn’t pick up on it. Motsi very passionate about it. First 40 of the series!!
Bobby & Dianne - Salsa (Dirty Dancing)
Can’t believe he said the line, in his accent. Was good, very much copied the dance from the film. That lift though, she looked nervous going into it so it didn’t flow well at all. Motsi said ‘it’s a big song, you better be ready for it.’ She thought he was, I didn’t think so much. Overmarked, for sure.
So it doesn’t really matter what I predicted ahead of this show. At this point I think we’re looking at Ellie as a definite finalist and it really could be any of the others depending what happens on the night. Bobby and Annabel would be most at risk, to my mind, but they have to do two dances next week so the pressure could tell on any of the four remaining couples.
Can’t believe there’s just two weeks to the final!
