Top and bottom of the pops
Published September 23, 2023

I just wanted to celebrate the fact that the Top of the Pops replays have started again on BBC Four, after taking an extended break to make way for the Proms. We’d just dipped our toes into the start of 1995 when the classical stuff took over but now we’re back, and it’s brilliant!
Britpop is starting to emerge and breakthrough the dance numbers, we’re still seeing warblers like Celine Dion rule the roost, but also the oddities are cropping up like Cotton Eye Joe.
This week, there were two episodes aired from February 1995, but they weren’t consecutive as one week’s chart entry was missing. The BBC have been careful to not show any episodes with controversial figures in, this time it being R Kelly. It’s a shame because I sourced the goods elsewhere and it’s a really fun show - presented by Gary Olsen and featuring performances from Suede, The Go-Gos and even an odd situation where Sting played bass for Jimmy Nail, then Jimmy played guitar while Sting was performing.
I can totally understand not wanting to give certain people air time, but why does everyone else have to suffer for it? Cut out the bad parts and air the rest, that is surely the better way? Then again, it may be asking a bit much for a cash-strapped BBC to put additional resources into editing a show from almost thirty years ago that is really just being used as filler, when you can just skip it and move on to the next.
Anyway, the joy of the internet is that the missing elements can be found elsewhere and 1995 can still be viewed completely. Roll on next week where we’ll get to see Blur, Madonna and… PJ and Duncan?
