A while back, at the height of my new-found Star Wars obsession, I realised I needed to find a way to watch the Star Wars Rebels TV show. I discovered the DisneyLife iOS app, which allowed me to watch the series, and as long as I watched it within 30 days (which I did), then I could cancel the subscription and only have been charged for one month’s use.

I did all of the above and then forgot about the app, until it was updated just ahead of this Christmas period. The price was lowered from £9.99 to £4.99, the app migrated to the Apple TV, and more content was added. With the knowledge that the festive period means lots of time spent at home, I signed back up to watch some more stuff.

What’s great about the app is the sheer volume of content available. It’s all Disney stuff, obviously, and it’s not ALL the Disney stuff, but it’s a good proportion of the things you might feel like watching over the Christmas period. Lots of festive films, lots of Pixar films, lots of Disney classics, and plenty of live action movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean films as well. There’s plenty of TV shows to watch, although they are aimed at younger viewers, of course. There are also some additional extras, such as behind the scenes clips and little shorts associated with the films and characters you know and love.

My only complaint is that it’s clearly an app for kids, featuring bright colours and big buttons, more pictures than words. That’s fine, but I’m surely not the only adult interested in watching a bit of Disney content now and again, and the app definitely makes me feel like I’m intruding on something reserved for the younger viewer.

That aside, if you have kids who like Disney content, this app is surely a must, a bargain, because I know that kids like to re-watch stuff, and there’s no limit to the number of times you can put things on repeat. It’s also all good, safe, content and autoplays from one thing to the next, so you can plonk kids in front of the app (either on iPad or Apple TV, great on the big screen!) and get on with your chores.

I don’t know if I’ll keep the subscription going for more than a few months, because I don’t have time to watch all the content that I want to, but it’s a great way to get access to things like the Muppets Christmas Carol (seen), Frozen (not seen), and The Lion King (need to see again) all in one place at the touch of a single button. Good work, Disney!
