Doctor Who: Series 7, Episode 2 - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
Published September 9, 2012
Presumably, this episode’s title comes as an homage or a satire of Snakes on a Plane. I haven’t seen the film but if it is anything like as mad as this weekend’s Who outing, I’m on board.
The action got going straight away, with the Doctor picking up his “gang” and heading straight to the spaceship housing the aforementioned prehistoric creatures. He referenced not having a gang before, but I can’t think that is right. There was a very poignant moment in one of the earlier episodes where every section of the TARDIS was manned for a change - instead of the one man doing it all by himself. If that’s not a gang, I don’t know what is.
But this time the Doctor wants to surround himself with an Egyptian Queen, a game hunter, and of course, his BFF Ponds, with bonus father.
After gathering everyone together, they all spend some time rampaging around a ship trying to figure out what is going on, who is behind it all, and why on earth there are dinosaurs flying through space. It gradually becomes clear that it’s an ark, the Silurians were trying to two-by-two the dinosaurs but they are no longer around. Instead, there’s a nasty chap missing a leg who prefers money to morals.
The story is a great romp with a lesson behind it, but what really comes across is the sheer fun of it all. There’s only a small glimpse of the presumably sorrowful parting that is heading rapidly in our direction, but there’s little time for feeling down in the dumps. With the array of characters installed in this episode, the banter is incredible (if a little over the top at times), and the quotes just kept on coming.
- What sort of a man doesn’t carry a trowel?
- Big fan, high five.
- Move away from the pterodactyls.
- Take us to your leader - too good to resist.
- Argos… for the universe.
I could go on forever.
It was, ultimately, quite baffling but great fun throughout, and the only conclusion to come to is that this is the kind of crazy Doctor Who adventure that we like. Last series, when we were all scratching our heads trying to figure out what was happening, it wasn’t a fun kind of “huh?” it was a “oh, people are stealing babies, this is dark” kind of confusion. This year, so far, seems to be so much lighter that it makes the perfect Saturday evening entertainment. I know there are sad things coming, but I much prefer the way things are being handled this time than last. We shall see!
Next week: Cowboys and Aliens, with added Doctor!
