Friday Five - Blogs about TV
Published August 12, 2011
So far, my blogging about media has been limited to films, Doctor Who and The Archers, with the occasional one-off if a piece of viewing really inspires me. It’s something of a dream of mine to have enough time and dedication to blog about TV more often, and I do have some vague plans to do more of it. Here are five blogs that inspire me in that direction, and are great reads.
- pauseliveaction. I don’t remember when I found PLA but I think I was sucked in by their Archers updates, then the Casualty posts were brilliant, and from there I was hooked. There are some shows I don’t watch, but the ones I do are always great fun to read - an irreverent view, which usually puts into words exactly what I was thinking.
- Guardian TV & Radio blog. I love their series blogging, taking something like The Hour and examining it in great detail. I remember reading their Mad Men posts, when the first series was shown on the BBC. (Really need to get my hands on some more Don Draper.) I’m also really enjoying their current Box Set Club, where they review old shows.
- TV Pixie. A bit more newsy, but with some great reviews thrown in as well. I sort of fell into TV Pixie, after Watch With Mother posts were directed over there instead. There are some episode by episode guides, but I like thinks such as the Eastenders Update, even though I don’t watch!
- Cultbox. This site tends to cover a programme from previews and sneak peeks all the way through to transmission and reviews, so it can be hard to pick and choose what you don’t want to see in case of spoilers. However, the reviews are good and I really enjoyed their recent Top 5 historical figures that should be in Doctor Who.
- BBC TV blog. A little bit different, because it’s not so much about reviews and more about an insight into current and upcoming programmes from the people that make them. I love hearing from the people behind the titles, particularly if they are not someone you would usually hear from.
There are a few more I follow, but these are the top five. I’m always on the lookout for new blogs to follow, though, so if you’ve got a recommendation, I’d love to hear it.
