Sorry seems to be the hardest word

Published December 16, 2010

I must say, being back on Wordpress is just like putting on your favourite jumper. It may not be pretty, but it’s warm and comforting.

The Squarespace adventure was a bit of a disaster. I have never known such unfiltered spam to be allowed through. At first I thought I was doing something wrong, missing some kind of obvious step but no. The commenting system over there just isn’t up to scratch.

Let’s start at the beginning.

  1. Discover Ugg boot spam on blog. Remove spam.
  2. Discover the page that actually lets you mark comments as spam as you remove them. Do that instead.
  3. Realise this marking as spam is making no difference as identical comments keep on coming in.
  4. Tweet Squarespace. They say they are aware of the problem and a new system is coming.
  5. Live with deleting comments every day.
  6. Realise that when you search for ‘ugg’ on the site, there are spam comments that do not show up in the comment tracking page.
  7. Delete all those.
  8. Live with deleting spam comments and checking for hidden spam comments too.
  9. Realise you can sign up for emails every time a new comment comes in, which should solve the hidden spam issue.
  10. Search for ugg and realise it hasn’t.
  11. Wake up and realise that Marc Jacobs has got in on the act and receive six emails in a row - all spam.
  12. Switch off comments on site.
  13. Give up Squarespace.

The conversation on Twitter went something like this:

Me: Have had to switch off comments on my site because @squarespace SUCKS.

Them: So sorry Christine, spam fixes are on the way, yes. We realize it’s a pressure point.

Me: I refuse to believe there isn’t even a tiny tweak you could’ve attempted to help ease the situation. It’s been 2 whole months.

Them: The project on the whole is an intensive process. We are looking into stopgap measures though.

Me: Ok. Sadly, my time is worth more than trawling through ugg boot comments every day, so it’ll probably be too late for me.

And so here I am. Back with my tail between my legs. I left Wordpress because I was annoyed I couldn’t change the font. Now, having seen what’s on the other side, that seems ridiculous.

The rest of Squarespace is brilliant, the customisation, the options, the embedding, it’s all great. But I am left with a sour taste in my mouth, and just a tiny bit less respect for Leo.

Nevertheless, onwards and upwards. I will catch up all the old posts as soon as I get a minute. For now, we are back in business. And comments are on. Do your worst, Ugg, I know Wordpress can handle it.
