8 down, 18 to go

Published August 22, 2010

I completed the next letter of the A-Z Adventure yesterday, and it was great fun! I will blog it soon. Before I left in the morning, though, I had a bit of a panic. I have lots of plans and not enough time and why did I ever think this was a good idea in the first place? After a bit of thought and contemplation, I came to some conclusions.

Let’s get straight to the point. When I said I was going to do the entire alphabet over the course of a year, I might have wildly over-estimated my abilities to go outside. Therefore, I’m adjusting the rules and regulations slightly, so that I hope to complete it as soon as possible, but it might take more like two years.

What do you mean “that’s okay, it’s your adventure, do whatever you like” ? I have excuses and everything!

  1. It wasn’t until after I started that I realised, effectively, I have to go somewhere at least every two weeks to complete it in time. Did you know there are 26 letters in the alphabet and 52 weeks in the year? I should have thought about the maths before I began! I wasn’t too worried to start with, because I did the Edinburgh weekend which took in four letters and got me weeks ahead. Problem is, I let those week pass without staying ahead, and now I’m right back where I should be. Hey, at least I’m not behind yet!
  2. Lots of things shut at the end of October. I had anticipated things closing during the winter, and thought I could work around it. But the reason for doing the alphabet adventure is to go out and see things that I’ve always wanted to see. The amount of compromises I had to make when planning around closed attractions was very disappointing.
  3. When I started, I was mad at F1, but now the Grand Prix weekends are beginning to get more important again, which narrows down my options for time away.
  4. The only real reason I set the year as a goal is because I had a plan to see something nearer the end of the alphabet which only comes round once a year, and because I needed the motivation. Now the A-Z Adventure is part of my life list, I’m less worried that I’m just going to give up. Plus, I’m enjoying it far too much - it shouldn’t be stressful, it should be fabulous!

So, yes. Watch out for the letter I coming soon, and the rest of the alphabet coming not so soon.
