Who we are vs. who we were

When I was a kid, some days I would get fed up with my mum and dad niggling at each other, sharing those little bitty remarks that seemed completely unnecessary. I would close my eyes in the back of the car and sing Backstreet Boys songs to myself shut out the noise.
A few weeks ago, I was talking to my mother on the phone, and having a conversation with Mr C at the same time. My mum remarked on how we sound just like they do.
It suddenly hit me - I am turning into my parents!
Well, not really, but I did realise that Mr C and I do the exact same niggly thing. It’s not that we’re arguing or actually having a go at each other, it’s all in jest. We’re just talking and throwing words around and trying to make each other laugh through insults and clever arguments rather than jokes. We both know that it’s not serious and nobody gets hurt.
All those times I was sat in the back of the car wishing I was anywhere but listening to that continuous stream of arguments was a waste of time. I should have joined in and got some practice for now!
It’s weird, isn’t it, how things look different when you’re on the other side of them?
