The British Film Institute have announced a partnership with the BBC Archive that will see a greater development of public access to their content. Utilising the massive infrastructure of broadband in the UK, plus the extent of which the BBC use it, the BFI want to allow everyone in the UK to see the archived material.

Although there are no significant details released at the moment, the partnership has been sealed and intends to move forward.

Director of the BFI, Amanda Nevill, is sure that working with the BBC is the way forward for the archive:

Film and the moving image has never been so important – it permeates everything we do today. Joining forces with the BBC makes perfect sense. We both have a shared ambition that even more people can explore the full breadth of the collections we each hold on behalf of the nation.

She also added that the BFI are aware of a huge demand for greater accessibility to their material and that this partnership is just the start. I haven’t ever really thought about the BFI and what they have stored, but if it was available on the internet, then it would probably capture my imagination much more than a dusty warehouse somewhere.
