Radio in The Office

I’ve dabbled in internet radio for a long time, never a religious listener but always happy to give it a go. I wrote previously about how much I was enjoying Absolute’s variety of online streaming options - select your preferred musical decade and listen away, safe in the knowledge you’ll get none of that “noise” of today. A new station has crossed my path over the last few weeks, and it’s called The Office on 181.

Some absolutely great radio

Some absolutely great radio

A long while ago, when my best friend and I would get together, we used to dream of going to live in Florida. I’m not sure whether it was the sunshine or the proximity to the Backstreet Boys that was the key influencer, but whatever it was, we wanted some of the Florida life. To get a taste for it, we would listen to radio stations from the FL area. It was different and exotic and quite exciting.

Compare my radio

Compare my radio

Have you seen a new site called Compare My Radio? It’s from some lab type people at Absolute Radio, and is currently in Beta, but it’s a very clever idea. Their short little blurb says: Compare My Radio tracks UK radio stations’ “now playing” information and makes sense of it so you don’t have to. The basic premise seems to be to find a radio station that is right for you, depending on what you want from it.

How to keep up with Wimbledon

How to keep up with Wimbledon

This year, there are more ways than ever to keep up with what’s happening at the hallowed tennis grounds, and I am grateful because each year I get more and more scatterbrained. I extolled the virtues of the BBC’s coverage last year, and there’s more of the same going on for the next two weeks. From what I can tell, we can enjoy: The Wimbledon live blog, giving updates from all over the competition High profile live match updates - including video, and game by game commentary Tennis programmes on the iPlayer, including a couple of matches each day in their entirety, plus the usual Today at Wimbledon fare.

1Xtra to tour the nation

For the first time in their six years of broadcasting, Radio 1’s sister station 1Xtra is to go on tour. The Breakfast Show will be in five different cities over the course of a week from 16th-20th March. The show goes out live each morning from 8-11am. It’s presented by Trevor Nelson and Gemma Cairney, and will feature performances from special guests. From the BBC Press Release, here are the details of the tour:

Get your message across

Get your message across

When The Archers became available as a podcast, I was excited, simply from a podcasting fan’s point of view. Then I started listening, and was intrigued by the way radio soap is put together. The little things fascinated me – having to say character’s names more than you would in real life because they’re not always distinguishable by their voices, managing to make an entire 13 minutes listenable, despite very little happening, and clearly doing plenty of research into current and potential farming techniques.

The blues just may wash away, if you wait for a rainy day

The blues just may wash away, if you wait for a rainy day

I was sitting in my car on the way home from the most awful day ever. I was stopped at some traffic lights. The Feeling came on the radio, with the lyrics of the title. Suddenly, the sky got really, really dark. It turned a beautiful blue that I’ve never seen before and all the clouds merged into one giant dark mess. The sun was shining in from one side, and lit up the entire street.

Beware the big grey box

Beware the big grey box

Jo Whiley on Radio 1 is starting a campaign to stop people watching television for one week. It’s part of her ‘I Have Never’ slot which is there to get people doing things they would never normally dream of, getting them to engage with other people (I have never given a flower to a stranger), getting them to embrace new things (I have never been to see a band I’ve never heard of) and that kind of life-enhancing thing.

Gah!

Gah!

I had such a good post planned. I was thinking it up the whole time I was doing the ironing (which spanned the listening of all of my newly downloaded The Calling album - yes, there were that many clothes). I had it all perfectly written in my head and had just sat down to post it… when what happens? Mr C happens. I don’t want to complain, but when I have to sit and search through a half hour programme on Radio 4 for a non-existent clip featuring Bono of U2 fame, thus forgetting the perfect entry I had spent such a long time preparing… I’m forgiven for being a little miffed, right?

Sunday

I fell asleep kinda early last night but I was listening to Radio 2 and I managed to listen to it all night, it was great! But at about 7am this morning they started doing religious stuff, so I fell back asleep again.
