A Google gas station journey

A Google gas station journey

It all started with this note from my Zombieland Film Watch post: 5:06 – Recognise that petrol station from that music video. Because there was a shot of a petrol station right at the beginning, when he was laying out some of his ground rules for surviving the zombie apocalypse. Now, I know what you’re thinking - it looks like any petrol station ever, and… well, we’ll get to that. For now, stick with me.

No need for a designated driver

No need for a designated driver

Google have finally taken the plunge and announced they will be building their own self-driving cars, rather than attempting to adapt existing machinery to be self-sufficient. It makes sense, after testing out the viability of the concept, to then start from the ground up and create a new vehicle. The design is a bit bubble car, but if it serves the purpose, there’s always room for improvement on that front.

Bye to Google Reader, hello to Feedly

Bye to Google Reader, hello to Feedly

Google Reader shut down today, to mixed reactions from: “Finally!” to “Now to see what this alternative is like,” to “It’s 1st July already??” Thankfully, I was one of the middle batch. When Google first announced they would be closing their feed reader, I thought it was going to be the end of the world. Then for a couple of days I didn’t read any feeds at all, and figured that actually I could probably get on with my internet life quite well without them.

Reader all about it

Reader all about it

Last week, Google caused a right kerfuffle by announcing the closure of Google Reader - the RSS feed reading service that lets you keep up with news and websites via the magic of syndication. They’ve blamed the closure on a desire to focus on key products, plus the decline of users on the service. They’re not saying they want to promote the use of Google+ instead, but we all know that is the case.

Baby Panda Thursday #87

A couple of weeks ago, Google featured pandas in their doodle for Earth Day. They were interactive and moved about a little when you hovered over them, but even stationery, they were still little cutsies. I do approve of the penguins, too, but this is not Baby Penguin Thursday.

Turn by turn by phone

Turn by turn by phone

This time last year, Google added new functionality to Maps on Android phones - Google Navigation. The new feature allowed you to search for directions as per usual, but then take it a step further and switch the results into turn by turn navigation. I’ve long resisted the SatNav world, although I have no real reason why. Perhaps I couldn’t justify the cost in my head, and didn’t particularly want another gadget, although I don’t recall putting even that much thought into it.

Google helps fix the things it broke

Sometimes, when I load Google Reader, it turns Turkish. It’s been happening for a long time, and I have no idea why. All the settings I can see are set to English, but I must have hit a button at some point in the distant past that pointed it towards Turkey. It happens on all different types of browser, on various gadgets, and on various internet connections, so it’s definitely a Google thing and not me.

Google Instant Search - Just because we can

Instant Search has been out and about for a while now, and I can’t see that it’s made my life any better, but I don’t particularly hate it either. I’ve been catching up with some TWiT podcasts, and Leo has talked extensively about why they would choose to implement something like this and what purpose it serves. It’s an interesting subject, because search is so very fundamental to the way I use the web.

Notes on the internet

Just a couple of things to note: I gave Chrome a try, I did, honest. I set it as my default and I used it for a couple of days. I really like the transition when you drag a tab to become a new window. Beautiful. I missed the Copy Link as Text Firefox plug-in something chronic. And when I was doing some F1 Minute stuff, Chrome was copy/pasting in a really funky way.

A bit of a doodle

I just wanted to post a quick note to recommend this site I found that collects together all the Google Doodles. It’s called Doodle Source and here’s what they say about it: Doodle Source is a website focused in gathering all Google Doodles (Google logos for holidays) that are happening right now. We will also sort all doodles and make an archive for every and each country that could be a Doodle target.
