The Better Life by 3 Doors Down

I heard Kryptonite recently, love that song, and realised I know nothing about 3 Doors Down and it was worth checking out a full album. It was good! Great fun rock, that really guitar-based late-90s soft rock that I love. Starting off with Kryptonite is a risk because it’s such a tune but actually the rest of the album holds its own and I enjoyed listening from start to finish. This was a really good week in the album adventure!

Hear My Cry by Sonique

Oddly, It Feels So Good was featured on a 1993 episode of Top of the Pops that the BBC are re-airing, and it just put me in mind of this dance version which I knew better. So it had to be time to dip into Sonique’s back catalogue and this is some proper late 90s/early 00s dance pop that is wonderful to hear. I loved pretty much the whole album, except it feels like an odd choice to stick a remix of the lead song at the end that is so much worse than the original at the top. Bit of a weird note to end on but otherwise, I loved it.

Hybrid Theory by LINKIN PARK

When I listened to this album, it was instantly familiar to me, I knew it far better than I thought I did… and I love it! From start to finish, it’s raging and raw, powerful and moving, and a whole assault on the senses. In The End is a proper classic song, but there are plenty more on there that live up to it. It obviously means more now that Chester is no longer with us, too.

Saints & Sinners by All Saints

If you start an album with Pure Shores, you’re really raising the bar very high and giving yourself a lot to live up to. Unfortunately, I don’t know that the rest of it stands up, although of course Black Coffee is a good single too, but if I’m honest, I couldn’t pick the rest of it out of a line up.

One Touch by Sugababes

The very first Sugababes album and thus it is them in their first iteration - featuring Siobhan, Mutya and Keisha. A couple of these songs are stand out brilliant, I love Overload and Run For Cover, but all of them have stood the test of time.

All That You Can't Leave Behind by U2

I really liked this album, it’s probably their best one? I do think it suffers from that problem that some of the greatest albums do - where there are a few amazing tracks together… and then you have the rest of the album. You can’t kick off with Beuatiful Day, Stuck, and Elevation and expect it to go anywhere but down.

Parachutes by Coldplay

This is an album that has associations for me so it’s taken quite a while to pluck up the courage to get through it. But it’s such a good one, it was worth it. I really love it, the more wistful, melancholy and inventive side of Coldplay, back when they were just starting out.

America Town by Five for Fighting

I wasn’t really aware of Five for Fighting before, although it turns out that I know the Superman song from the Axis of Awesome multi-song extravaganza. Also, as it turns out, that ruined that song for me because it’s impossible not to sing ‘I’m a birdplane’ in the relevant places.

Black & Blue by Backstreet Boys

This is the last of the Backstreet Boys albums that I was properly obsessed with when it came out, and that has me pondering: do I like this album because it’s good or do I like it because I know it so well? If I listened to it for the first time now would I love it as much as I do? I don’t have the answer for that but all I can say is that I do love it.

Love the rhythms here. Subject matter can veer too far for me, I couldn’t listen to Kim the second time round. But then again, Stan is an absolute classic so it’s swings and roundabouts.
