Madonna by Madonna

It’s amazing to think this is Madonna’s debut album, starting her career with such great songs as Borderline and Holiday. Although it does sound of its time on the whole, there are elements of this album that are also timeless - Madonna’s signature sound being one of them. It’s a short album but packs a powerful punch and kicks off a long-lived and ever-changing career.

No Parlez by Paul Young

Hmm. So I knew of Paul Young basically from Live Aid, and having recently watched a documentary about the legendary concert, it seemed about time to give him a go. I wasn’t expecting there to be quite so many covers on the album, and very surprised to see a Joy Division song on there.

Faster Than the Speed of Night by Bonnie Tyler

What’s not to like about this? First it has the absolute powerhouse that is Total Eclipse of the Heart on there, but second, the other songs stand up just as well. It’s that pop/rock/opera style that Meatloaf does so well too, and I really loved it.

Fantastic by Wham!

Yay for lovely Wham! I thought the album wouldn’t stand up to Club Tropicana, and while that is clearly the best song of the eight, the rest isn’t so far behind. There was a bit more falsetto than I’d expected but mostly it’s George and Andrew doing what they do best.

Good, foot tapping rock, very listenable but an album stacked full of songs that all sound exactly the same. You’ve got to really like what they’re selling here, but if you do, you’re onto a winner.
