Down to Earth by Rainbow

This album is pretty much exactly what you think it’s going to be - some medium level rock tunes from a band that Wikipedia calls a supergroup as it features members from other bands coming together. To be hoenst, only Since You Been Gone has any staying power, the rest is quite forgettable, but overall it’s not a bad album.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac

I didn’t know any of the songs on this album and I still really loved it. It just has that nice Fleetwood Mac vibe throughout, rising and falling in energy but never flinching away from what makes the band great - noodly guitars and excellent vocals. Even though it’s a really long album that would normally annoy me, in this instance I was quite happy listening from start to finish and didn’t necessarily want it to end. Nothing massively stood out for me, but I liked the whole thing as a package.

I Am by Earth, Wind & Fire

I Am by Earth, Wind & Fire

If you’re looking to dip right back into the 70s, then this is the album for you. It’s stacked full of strong 70s beats, a couple of those old songs that you know and love and otherwise just fun times. I don’t think I’d really understood what Earth, Wind & Fire were or that they were behind these songs - Boogie Wonderland is such a long-standing classic, how did I not know who the artist was? But lesson learned and another album ticked off the list.

Setting Sons by The Jam

Setting Sons by The Jam

This got off to a confusing start for me, because the first track, Girl On the Phone, sounds just like I Fought the Law by The Clash… different band, same decade. On the first listen through, I think I got hung up on that fact and felt like all the songs sounded the same. But actually on the second listen through, it was really good, highs and lows, Smithers-Jones stands out as different to the others and quite moving. Then of course Eton Rifles gets a bit shouty towards the end. A good punk-pop ride.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

Obviously Joy Division and New Order have a huge place in music and culture, so it seemed only right to go back to the beginning and listen to the first album. I have to admit, though, I found this album to be a bit of a nothingness. It was fine, and while I was listening it was ok, but I didn’t think any of the songs were particularly special and despite having listened twice, I couldn’t really tell you anything about it. I know we go on to better things from here, though, so look forward to that.
