As an album, it’s great. That nice 60s feeling, with some songs that really stand the test of time. Monday, Monday could be written today! Great voices, lovely harmonies, good times!
As I recently listened to my first Beatles album of this adventure, it seemed only fair to give their bitter rivals a go as well. I had somehow thought The Rolling Stones were a bit more rocky than this, but they’re only just straddling the rock/pop border.
I can’t start this review without addressing the elephant in the room, or should I say the tortoise in the room. That is, surely, the worst album cover ever? Two guys photoshopped on the back of a cartoon tortoise… for no apparent reason? Every time I look at it, it makes me shake my head.
Wonderful album, stacked full of shorter but well-crafted songs. God Only Knows is just under three minutes of perfection. I wasn’t expecting there to be instrumentals, and as a whole Sloop John B stands out as not quite fitting in, but otherwise it all works well.
