After Hours by The Weeknd

I thought I was going to love this album, because I’ve heard people talking about how strong the 80s influence is, and Blinding Lights is one of my favourite songs of late. I don’t think it lived quite up to my expectations but it is a solid album.

Hold On, I'm Comin' by Sam & Dave

I can’t start this review without addressing the elephant in the room, or should I say the tortoise in the room. That is, surely, the worst album cover ever? Two guys photoshopped on the back of a cartoon tortoise… for no apparent reason? Every time I look at it, it makes me shake my head.

I knew a couple of songs from this album after they’ve been featured on Beats 1 over the months, and I’ve liked what I’ve heard. The album follows in the same vein as the initial singles - fantastic old school R&B with great beats, strong messages, and fantastic vocals.

Loved this album! There weren’t too many brand new choices out, so I looked back to last year to see something I might have missed and was flabbergasted to realise I hadn’t listened to Janelle Monáe! Make Me Feel is obviously an absolute Prince-style classic, but the entire album lives up to the hype.

This isn’t an album I was particularly excited about listening to but I have liked Khalid’s work previously so a new record is always going to be appreciated. This one was good, some fine songs, but it’s all just a bit too relaxed. I don’t know if there is such a thing as being too chilled but if there is, then this album is the epitome of it.
