0:35Fireworks from really far away are so weird.
5:36But she knew him, did she know him? It seemed like she knew him.
9:56“Horrid, horrid, not so horrid, horrid. I’m thinking we go with not so horrid.”
10:22Endless phones ringing in the newspaper office would do my head in.
13:40It surely does set a dangerous precedent if you let murderers dictate what and when you print.
17:57It’s usually the papers that give the serial killers names, isn’t it?
23:21He’s not very good at killing people, they keep living thank goodness.
32:37Weird seeing Ruffalo and Downey Jr together like this.
39:07God, never really thought about how hard it is to co-ordinate pre-email!
43:46Keep them on the line for 15 minutes! That’s something else that has gotten better with technology.
47:03“That was my headache.” Oof.
52:27Solving ciphers blows my mind.
1:03:21“The guy stole his logo off a watch.”
1:10:17Worst date ever.
1:20:59Ooh, limp, noted.
1:25:31He fits too perfectly when there’s still a whole half a film to go.
1:38:43It’s quite unusual for a movie to be made about an ongoing crime situation, isn’t it?
1:43:04“Do you want a drink? I don’t have anything blue.”
1:50:25He has to REMEMBER everything? With his actual brain?
2:00:32Wrong number. She’s not stupid, dude.
2:10:37But it IS more important than his family’s safety, he’s proving that.
2:24:50The one they investigated all that time ago. Argh!
2:31:27The timespan of this film!

Thoughts

I had a sudden desire to watch a detective movie, so searched for a list of the best and this one popped up. I’d never heard of it, and it seems like it should be more famous than it is - it’s got a tremendous cast and tells an interesting story.

About halfway through, I was perturbed by how long the movie was, we basically had a whole other film to sit through to get to the end. But then, suddenly, the second half flew by and we were at the end. I was also worried it wasn’t going to come to a good conclusion, but it did. Although justice isn’t always served, at least it came to a satisfying conclusion.

It was also very un-Hollywood, in that the person who was deemed to have done it was the one who was far too obvious the whole time.

The cast were great, you can’t really go wrong with a combination of Ruffalo, Downey Jr and Gyllenhaal, and they all did a great job not only with the story but also with showing the passing of time and how this case wears them down gradually. Good stuff.
