A kind of African Queen gone berserk, Overboard chronicles the misadventures of a bitchy society queen (Goldie Hawn) who lives on a luxury yacht with her class-conscious husband (Edward Herrmann) and put-upon butler (Roddy McDowall). When the yacht docks for repairs (that is, for more closet space), Hawn refuses to pay the local carpenter (Kurt Russell) because he used oak instead of cedar for the closets. The post-refusal argument results in Hawn pushing Russell overboard. Hawn falls overboard herself and is rescued by a garbage scow. However, she remembers nothing of her pampered past. Through a series of high-energy, high-wit escapades the two protagonists find each other, the kids turn into lollipops and all is well that ends well.

I really thought this was going to be a problematic movie - the concept doesn’t lend itself well to the more modern gender discussions we’re all having at the moment. But actually, put your trust in Garry Marshall, it wasn’t too bad.
There were two things I did think were a bit wonky, and that was him kissing her in the hospital in the first instance, and then actively convincing her the kids were her own - that seemed harsh when he could have said step-mom at any time.
Nevertheless, for the subject matter, it was an alright movie, entertaining, a good story that mostly made sense despite being high concept. And you can’t deny their chemistry, obviously, even when they were yelling at each other. Pretty good but mostly a relief!
