1:17Do conductors get that into it they kick along with the can-can?
5:20“On the hill near Paris..” Is there a hill near Paris??
5:20Oh god, Baz’s stylings are to die for.
8:55“Nothing funny, I just like talent.”
10:24The perfect plan never includes absinthe.
10:54Kylie Tinkerbell, why not.
21:00They are still mixing in Nirvana, to god knows how many songs.
26:14“It’s quite modern what I do…” Terrifying sentence.
42:37Never thought about words to the can can song before.
50:11For ages I’ve been like, I don’t get this but actually I do. It’s our late night slightly tipsy YouTube music video trawls.
58:12The foreshadowing and stuff on this is starting to stress me out.
1:02:35Way to ruin Madonna for everyone ever.
1:13:08“I don’t like this ending.” Oh dude, we need to have a chat.
1:20:10Bit of Strictly, bit of Addams family… who knows.
1:29:41The doctor told them all but not her? Seems unethical.
1:38:21Can’t believe that’s the same guy as R&J. Madness.
1:48:36My song knowledge needs more work, tbh.
1:57:13I did know that consumption was TB though, so that’s something.

Thoughts

So look, we may not have been exactly in the right frame of mind to start watching another film - it was late, we had been drinking. But this was so not good. I love Baz Luhrmann’s work, so arty, so well-crafted, so fitting with strong music that gives you a sensory overload sort of vibe and really sucks you in.

The trouble with this is, I didn’t find the story particularly interesting. It didn’t grab me at all and then I didn’t think it sustained a full two hour’s worth. The songs were good and the cast amazing but somehow all the individual pieces didn’t come together to make a coherent work.

I’m disappointed because I love a good musical, it’s just that this wasn’t one.
