Title: Girls Trip Director: Malcolm D. Lee Year: 2017 Run time: 2hrs 2m
“When four lifelong friends-Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah-travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.”
2:39 - “If I will it, I can have it all.” 3:44 - Depressing start to a film. 6:50 - Never thought about ‘letting you go’ being misconstrued like that. Interesting. 14:59 - Loving Queen L’s amazing hair. 18:19 - Little Jada is so tiny. 20:57 - “It’s like travelling with Beyoncé.” 24:27 - These are some serious anger issues. 31:06 - “You always ain’t gonna do it again.” 41:02.- It’s not too much to ask, considering she is guest of a guest. 41:52 - Actual Estelle! 46:38 - Actual P Diddy! 56:54 - Amazing what make up and hair artists can do. 1:04:37 - Alcohol that comes with instructions is not necessary. 1:10:57 - Paying by shoe is fun. 1:17:00 - Their idea of keeping a low profile doesn’t quite stack up. 1:27:51 - Genuine bass playing, yaas! 1:33:48 - Dina is brilliant. 1:45:42 - “And you don’t think we don’t know that?” Complicated but nice.
This is everything that we wanted from Rough Night - girls hanging out, ribbing each other, getting to know each other again, and improving each other along the way. It had plenty of story and drama, and I liked that it wasn’t always obvious what was going to happen, and overall it was just a really well made film.
There were some moments I could have done without, but they didn’t really detract from the film’s successes. Each of the four actors brought something different to the table which was brilliant, but there’s no doubt that Tiffany Haddish was the standout. Good film, very watchable, and probably quite re-watchable too.
