“Relieved of her maid of honor duties after being dumped by the best man, Eloise (Anna Kendrick) decides to attend her oldest friend’s wedding anyway and finds herself seated among a group of misfit strangers in the back of the ballroom. 2:17 - Can’t believe she sent it back half burned! Amazing. 7:25 - Already, it’s clear this is going to be the best table. Weddings are stupid. 9:59 - “I am a successful businessman,” really doesn’t shut down a line of questioning. 13:15 - I’m adding “as a normal person” to all my sentences from now on. 21:10 - This film isn’t going to make me feel any better about weddings. 23:39 - “Best man child.” GENIUS. 28:15 - Lyrics isn’t an instrument. 35:31 - Stephen Merchant is just so freaking adorable. 38:33 - Oof, depressing speech. 44:04 - It’s so interesting how people can have different views of the same conversation. 47:57 - “What kind of nanny are you?” “Retired.” 54:12 - Yea, the furry bow tie is a bit weird. 57:19 - “You love weddings? Please. You couldn’t get through our wedding fast enough.” 1:05:47 - Bad Reputation in Spanish is brilliant! 1:12:17 - “I don’t want to be disappointed by anyone but you.” Omg, perfect. 1:21:13 - Wyatt Russell comfortably the worst dancer out of that group, bless.
This was a really lovely film, from start to finish. The group of outcasts were lovely, all of them, and all had their own quirky story to tell - mostly quite sad but with occasional glimpses of happiness along the way. Once I got over my revulsion of the whole wedding thing, I was totally invested and wanted to know how it all worked out.
One of the best things about it was how the layers all added up, how the stories intertwined, and how there were callbacks and moments of foreshadowing that made it a rich story. Short, sweet, funnier than expected, and really just an adorable watch.
