Title: Keeping Up with the Joneses Director: Greg Mottola Year: 2016 Run time: 1hr 45
“Go deep undercover for outrageous laughs in this comedy with an all-star cast, including Zach Galifianakis, John Hamm, Isla Fisher and Gal Gadot. An ordinary suburban couple (Galifianakis, Fisher) finds it’s not easy keeping up with the Joneses (Hamm, Gadot) – their seemingly perfect new neighbors – especially when they discover Mr. and Mrs. “Jones” are covert spies embroiled in international espionage.”
1:18 – Ugh, those Keep Calm posters. 4:59 – Just Dance is a great use of an empty house. 8:54 – First rule of trust exercise – define the destination. 12:01 – Is giving neighbours presents a thing? Not sure I would ever think of doing that. 13:25 – Junetober fest makes no sense but I love it. 16:40 – “Maybe I should show you how to throw like a girl.” YES! 22:04 – I feel like Tim Jones woulnd’t be an easily searchable name, though. 23:21 – There are home brewing shops? 27:14 – “I’d probably just get in trouble from Corporate.” 35:49 – Unique way of cracking walnuts. 41:53 – Couldn’t you show the police the bug? 43:06 – Power walking makes you look so weird. 43:44 – “Never judge a woman by her spice rack.” 54:12 – The comma is important. “This is my wife, Karl.” 56:01 – “Get in the car and I will explain everything… mostly.” 1:05:21 – Zach always seems to end up being the needy one who wants friends. 1:06:55 – I forgot about the explosion! 1:12:07 – Zach and Isla are tiny compared to the spies. 1:14:13 – The British teeth thing bugs me. Natural teeth, thank you. 1:26:31 – The boss! 1:29:11 – APPLE WATCH. Spies wear Apple Watches.
Blatantly just Mr & Mrs Smith with the comedy ramped up, it took me a while to warm up to this film but when I did, I couldn’t stop laughing. It got off to a slow start and I think the key was to get the two couples working together in the limited way that they could - that’s where the comedy really started happening. I could have done with slightly less of no one believing Isla, and definitely less of the whole snake restaurant business.
Most of the reviews are pretty bad, but I thought it was quite good. It was a pretty tame role for Zach but it was a great cast, and they worked together well after an intentionally frosty start.
