Title: Imperium Director: Daniel Ragussis Year: 2016 Run time: 1hr 49m
“Inspired by real events and the experiences of ex-FBI agent Michael German, IMPERIUM follows Nate Foster, an idealistic young FBI agent who is selected to go undercover amongst a group of white supremacists, suspected of initiating a terrorist plot. Immersed in a deeply unsettling, hate-filled world, Nate must fight to maintain control of his own beliefs and principles whilst working to identify the threat and keeping his true identity and motives a secret. Starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Now You See Me 2) as Foster in what is being hailed as his more powerful, transformative role to date, and featuring an outstanding supporting performance from Toni Collette (Miss You Already, Krampus) as his wisecracking fellow FBI agent, IMPERIUM also features a stellar supporting cast, including Burn Gorman (TV’s Torchwood, The Dark Knight Rises), Tracy Letts (The Big Short, TV’s Homeland), Nestor Carbonell (The Dark Knight Rises, TV’s Bates Motel), and Sam Trammell (TV’s True Blood, The Fault In Our Stars).”
1:59 – You know it’s serious when they start with a Hitler quote. 5:57 – It’s quite the look for Daniel, but I’m impressed by the language skills. 8:21 – “Two o’clock last night.” Odd turn of phrase. 13:11 – People skills and controlling situations? That’s not Bourne! 18:43 – Secret laptop sofa cushion. 21:31 – Toni Collette is so good. 22:04 – What is it about supremacy that means you can’t have hair? 27:59 – Ugh, trying to hold a conversation in a club. 31:32 – “Oh yea, we know where you live,” he says, standing outside the front door. 33:38 – Undercover better pay well if you end up with a tattoo. 42:34 – You have to think so fast undercover. I would fail so bad. 48:05 – Flatter people and tell them what they want to hear. 51:29 – Little Daniel is a bit too small to driver that truck. 58:07 – I’m worried about them downing alcohol in the car… who is going to drive? 1:09:53 – Oh god, this is stressful. 1:15:15 – Well at least he didn’t lose his $7500. 1:22:57 – It has to be the civilised guy that is the bad one. Creepily normal but totally bonkers. 1:36:18 – “These guys are fanatics, they will not be taken alive.” 1:40:20 – “It’s going to miss you too.”
I was a bit wary going into this film, keen to watch anything that Daniel Radcliffe is in, but scared of how intense it appeared from the trailer. Thankfully, the film wasn’t as harsh in that way as I’d imagined, totally watchable, engrossing in fact.
It was hard, in places, but eye-opening and enlightening and all that kind of thing. Radcliffe does a great job, although I’m not sure he quite fits every single situation he ended up in - the truck being too big for him is a plain example.
Having said that, the acting was incredible, and I really thought it was a job well done.
