“They’ve got the adrenaline rush and the mean machines, but most of all, they’ve got the extreme need for speed. On the turbo-charged streets of Los Angeles, every night is a championship race. With nitro-boosted fury, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), rules the road turning all his challengers into dust. He and his rival, Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) are the boldest, the baddest and the best. But now, there’s new rage on the road. They know he’s tough, they know he’s fast, but what they don’t know is that he’s a speed demon detective (Paul Walker) with enough drive and determination to come out the winner. With intense full-throttle action, awesome high-speed stunts, and full-on pedal to the metal intensity, this fast and furious assault puts you in the driver’s seat and dares you to exceed all limits.”
1:30 – Green lights under the car are only marginally less rubbish than blue ones. 5:43 – It just sort of boggles my mind that people would drive around like that. Great to look at, obvs. 6:58 – “How you livin’, girl?’ Weird greeting but I quite like it. Not sure I could pull it off. 11:38 – Awesome soundtrack to this thing. 16:20 – Like the impromptu painting of a start line. 19:30 – Ooh, he went into warp speed! 22:45 – “It don’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning’s winning.” 29:47 – Woah, that’s some epic blue flame! 36:19 – Officer?? I did not see that coming. 40:07 – Well that was a real life floppy disk. Eeshk. 50:05 – Now he’s flat out lied to him. This can’t end well. 55:55 – Dude is actually sat in the engine hole. Amazing. 1:11:46 – It does feel like cheating that they can press a button like that. But then it’s awesome in the console games, so… no complaints. 1:20:32 – Coachella reference. 1:24:59 – If you had to list the number of ways this could have gone wrong… 1:27:20 – One downside to the long hair. Driving at speed is not so good in a convertible. 1:33:19 – Nitros round the streets of LA is impossible surely.
I really wasn’t expecting to like this very much - it’s probably just a bunch of pretty people racing cars to hip hop beats and not much else, right? Well, yea, it was that, but it also had more to it. There was actually a pretty good story tucked away there - quite Point Break in places, how undercover is too undercover for a cop to get? It gets a bit tortured in places, but stayed entertaining which is the main thing.
I really liked the racing, the music, the acting (although Paul Walker has that bizarrely enigmatic wooden style that has served Keanu Reeves so well) and despite the fact they were all a bunch of crazy lawbreakers, I quite liked them. He really turned out to be the worst cop ever, though. Really, truly, the worst.
