Title: X-Men: Days of Future Past Director: Bryan Singer Year: 2014 Run time: 2hrs 12m
“The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from the past, “X-Men: First Class,” in order to change a major historical event and fight in an epic battle that could save our future.”
1:27 – “The future. A dark, desolate world.” Brilliant, that’s something to look forward to. 7:12 – Aww, I was really liking that jumping through wormholes mutant. 9:45.- Logan and his cigar. Always cool, no matter what. 11:20 – Sending them back in time to destroy the creator of the sentinels? So far, so Terminator. 14:46 – Find the professor and convince him what is going on. So far, so Back to the Future. 17:03 – Never believe anyone when they say “this might sting a little.” 26:07 – Oof, it’s hard putting all these pieces together. Gotta remember Stryker now, too. 34:53 – I really like younger Xavier, even in this state. 40:40 – “It’s cool but it’s disgusting.” Ha, true. 43:37 – That glass thing is so clever, would it really work? 47:52 – Wow, this is like the Matrix turned up to eleven. Amazing. 55:45 – Are you allowed to say dead presidents are mutants? 1:05:06 – They’re really not doing their bit for the mutant brand. 1:17:21 – Those sentinels are huge! 1:23:08 – “Just because someone stumbles, it doesn’t mean they are lost forever.” 1:34:37 – The good old days when he didn’t set off every metal detector going. 1:44:38 – OMG, McKellan may as well have said you shall not pass. 1:58:52 – Aww, it is nice to see the school up and running again.
We decided to catch up on the intervening X-Men films so that we could watch this one - people have raved about it, after all. The trouble is, it was nowhere near as exciting as I thought it was going to be. There were lots of yay, and gasp, and ooh moments but mostly that was spotting the characters of old. For example, “Hooray, Halle Berry is back!” But “Oh, she gets to do just as little as she did in the first three.”
I love time travel, and it was kinda nice that this had the homages to other classic movies, but it felt like there wasn’t a lot else to it. Great characters, travelling around and doing stuff, and then poof, it was all rewritten just like Star Trek.
It was fine, but it wasn’t what I was hoping for.
