Title: Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Director: George Lucas Year: 2005 Run time: 2hrs 20m
“Years after the onset of the Clone Wars, the noble Jedi Knights lead a massive clone army into a galaxy-wide battle against the Separatists. When the sinister Sith unveil a thousand-year-old plot to rule the galaxy, the Republic crumbles and from its ashes rises the evil Galactic Empire. Jedi hero Anakin Skywalker is seduced by the dark side of the Force to become the Emperor’s new apprentice - Darth Vader. The Jedi are decimated, as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Yoda are forced into hiding.”
3:23 - I bet this takes some beating for the expense of an opening scene. 6:44 - “I’m not leaving without you,” he says. Except he didn’t have much good to say about Obi last film. 11:48 - I just can’t with the Count Dooku. It’s too much like Duckula. 18:05 - They put a lot of reliance on R2, considering he’s just a droid. 19:44 - The real question is, why is a droid coughing? 21:59 - “Not to worry, we’re still flying half a ship.” It split in two, so Titanic. 27:16 - Leia hair buns on Ms Padmé there. 31:12 - What a disgusting and meaningless conversation. “It’s only because I’m so in love.” BLEURGH. 44:26 - It is kinda fun watching him get darker and darker. 50:07 - Ha, Tarzan Wookie! 58:23 - Quadruple saber strategy!! Terrifying! 1:10:35 - She’s just sitting around waiting for him, right? Jeez. 1:11:50 - I like the purple saber. 1:16:59 - Darth Vader! Eeeeek. It all starts here. Or three films ago, I guess. 1:22:45 - Disloyal, backstabbing, two-faced, rubbishy Stormtroopers. 1:31:35 - The terrible wipes are quite distracting in this one. Barely noticed since the first film. 1:36:21 - No good being wise now, Padmé. Far too late for your mediocre meddling. 1:37:36 - Darth Vader’s naming ceremony, caught on CCTV. 1:47:01 - Aw, they took their capes off. I like the capes. Star Wars does good capes. 1:50:09 - “Not if anything to say about it, I have.” That one isn’t so catchy. 2:07:00 - The first breath.
This so nearly could have been the best of the three prequels. Hayden seemed to come into his own, picking up his acting skills and it was incredible watching his character getting darker and darker - physically and mentally. The descent was almost unbearable, but brilliant to see.
The prequel aspect has all the things I love about time travel movies, getting all the jigsaw pieces to fall into place so that Episode IV can then pick up where it left off. This third film had that in spades, it was so much fun to follow the twists and turns and getting each character into place.
My only complaint, and it’s a HUGE one, is Padmé. What a ridiculous descent into a hideous, simpering character. Where’s the feisty female from the second film? Hiding away in a room, bleating about Anakin non-stop, and then losing the will to live when he goes bad? Jesus, woman, have some self-respect. If not for you, for those two poor beings that you’re bringing into the world. Such rage about the entirety of Padmé’s story in this film, I don’t understand why people moan on about Jar Jar when there’s THIS going on.
But, to be a bit more positive about it, overall I thought the prequels were really entertaining. SO many people dislike them that I must be wrong, but to me, brand new to the whole series, they just added more to what is an incredible story. Now to watch them all again before Episode VII!
