Comedy crime drama from director Steven Soderberg starring Matt Damon and Scott Bakula, based on the true story told in the best-selling book by Kurt Eichenwald . Mark Whitacre (Damon) was a high flier in a hugely successful agricultural foods company, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), who, along with other senior employees, engaged in price fixing until he decided to turn informer for the FBI, gathering evidence against the corrupt company. Whitacre agreed to wear a wire and take recordings, all under the misguided impression that he would emerge from the investigation as the good guy. However, the FBI gradually learn that their star informer - and the key to their whole case - has not fully disclosed his own suspect dealings and it becomes increasingly difficult for them to determine if Whitacre is being truthful.

Background Info

I had never even heard of this film, knew absolutely nothing about it. Mr C and I sat down for what is becoming a regular film night, and this was a trailer that appealed to us, so we rented.

00:00:09 - What a great introduction to a film! 00:01:02 - Is this like the 70s or something? 00:02:02 - Didn’t realise George Clooney was a producer for this. ****00:03:40 - It’s like an Ocean’s 11 reunion. 00:04:53 - Certainly a bit of a different character to Bourne. 00:07:51 - Yay for Crichton getting a mention. 00:09:17 - With a beard, he looks a bit like Ewan McGregor. ****00:14:38 - The girl sounds like Drew Barrymore. 00:18:59 - I love living inside this guy’s head. He’s so random, he’s like me. ****00:25:52 - It’s good the FBI are asking why, because Mr C was just asking why and I didn’t have an answer. 00:29:07 - That is quite a low tech way of bugging a phone call. ****00:32:54 - All of the technology seems old for 1992. Are we sure this isn’t really set in the 70s? ****00:40:24 - The Gluconate Guy. Does anyone know what gluconate is? ****00:44:16 - Eww. Ants in the bathroom. 00:47:04 - Any film with philosophy about polar bears is fine in my book. 00:52:23 - He’s getting good at this spying business now. 0014 indeed. 00:57:42 - Interesting that the raid is the least important part of the film. 01:05:52 - That man is worse at keeping a secret than even I am. 01:07:03 - Which Tom Cruise movie was that? Film references inside films are not fair. 01:16:03 - I like the second FBI guy. He has nice eyes. 01:26:22 - It’s not looking good for Mark right about now. 01:30:37 - The number he stole keeps creeping up and up. Every story should be embellished each time it is told. ****01:39:42 - Woah! Hair! Or lack of it.

Conclusions

The film was not at all what I thought it would be from the trailer. Very strange throughout - but highly entertaining. It sort of twisted towards the end and I maybe would have preferred something else, but the facts are what they are, and I wasn’t left feeling disappointed which is the main thing.
