0:30 - Who knew there was all that detail behind the Disney castle? 3:43 - “Ooh, slogans are good.” 4:33 - Air Racing for Dummies! 9:42 - Oooh, green smoke from a plane. That’s new. 14:27 - He totally just did a Vettel-esque “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” 17:59 - I mean, this bit is blatantly cars. The old guy reluctantly advising the young racer. 18:30 - “I’ve flown thousands of miles and never been anywhere.” 24:19 - They tipped the tractor cows! 26:56 - Love the small plane at a busy metropolitan airport. 27:39 - Is that John Cleese? 31:00 - Lofty Crofty the blimp!!! Amazing. 35:33 - French plane. Like the pick up line though. “How much does a snow plough weigh? Enough to break the ice.” 38:29 - “I don’t cry, I’m British.” 43:01 - This Cars land seems to be stuck with a perpetual full moon. Not complaining though. 46:29 - Air Sports Illustrated? I need a copy of that. 49:10 - It’s all gone a bit Mission Impossible. 58:47 - He’s landing on an aircraft carrier! “For flying out loud.” 1:11:02 - Realised I love the little pit stop cars because they’re like minions. 1:16:43 - “That’s right, Lofty.” 1:19:45 - Dotty is very cool. And she knows how clever she is. 1:24:05 - Cool credits.
I hadn’t really wanted to watch this one. It was clearly Disney cashing in on the success of Cars, and they were making fast and loose with the connection even though there’s clearly no Pixar going on here. But the trailer for the second film looked a lot better, so we thought we’d start at the beginning. Also, it has Crofty in it and that has to be seen!
It was actually really good. It takes on the same sort of theme as Cars, grumpy old veteran teaches the young upstart how to race better, lots of snarky enemies are overcome and it all winds up in a happy ending. The difference is Dusty is a nice plane who uses his personality to get through the big around the world race. Lightning McQueen wasn’t all that nice to start with and had to overcome his failings to do better.
The film didn’t quite live up to Cars, but was a lot, lot better than Cars 2, so it was a good direction for the series to go in. There are a few things that don’t quite make sense, but mostly it was a lot of fun, it had Crofty and it added some more lovable characters to the Cars world.
