Title: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Director: Marc Webb Year: 2014 Run time: 2hrs 22m
“It’s great to be Spider-Man. For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen. But being Spider-an comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro, Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.”
7:44 - Presumably it’s a Go-Pro attached to Spiderman to get those great shots. 8:28 - Ooh, plutonium. They gonna make a time machine! 11:39 - He can’t have the actual Spiderman theme tune as his ringtone! 13:36 - Is Spiderman super-strong? I thought that “stopping traffic” thing was more Superman’s style. 21:56 - “Spiderban.” Bless him with the cold. 23:40 - He just did a minion-style “whaaaat?” Every film should have one of those. 35:24 - It’s like an episode of Casualty, waiting to see which bit is going to go wrong. Is it the eels, the electricity sparks, the ladder? 36:58 - It’s all the things. 49:30 - “Just once a day… sometimes more.” Not comforting, you big stalker. 57:57 - All the big screens are getting ruined. Humph. 1:07:03 - Not quite following why they have such awesome computers/screens at Oscorp, but then go home and check their gmail on a Sony Vaio. 1:12:30 - “Everything’s always complicated with Peter.” 1:28:39 - Whilst I’m loving the Minority Report style table, that’s a really bad posture. 1:32:02 - Buried train under an abandoned subway station. I bet it’s nice and bunker-quiet down there. 1:44:56 - “Stop the cab!” 1:49:41 - Having a rollercoaster with regards to Gwen. She was awesome knowing the science but then yelled Peter! 1:56:47 - Stupid idea. Planes needed one to go down and one up, not side by side Red Arrows style. 2:03:42 - I bet those are real tears. She won’t be in it anymore! 2:10:48 - Kiddie Spiderman is well cute. He could have his own films.
The last film we enjoyed, thinking it better than the originals, so were quite looking forward to this one.
An epic disappointment.
The only good thing about it was Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I thought he was brilliant, quirky and witty, and generally really likeable even when going through the wringer. Emma Stone was good but I thought they weren’t quite as much fun together as they were in the first.
The rest of the film was a mess. Too many villains, too many storylines, too much to take in. It was like three films in one, and on top of that, so many similarities to the Tobey Maguire three that I really had a hard time following what was going on. I was asking obvious questions that made me look a fool, when it really was just too complicated a plot.
