“Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name, Wayne’s World is a wacky, irreverent pop-culture comedy about the adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey). From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” which comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to produce a big-budget version - and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere).”
2:13 - Wonder what excellent thing Wayne and co would come up with the internet. 3:03 - “You’re sucking my will to live!” 5:16 - Bohemian Rhapsody still awesome, even on cassette tape. 6:17 - I didn’t realise the Queen bit was so early in the film. Why would anyone bother to watch the rest? 12:07 - Garth was sucking the jelly out of his doughnut with a straw. As you do. 12:41 - Actual Meatloaf! 18:51 - That guy looks after the groundhog. Hard to associated his voice with anything else. 20:46 - “Marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries.” 25:34 - What is that mega massive cocktail? I need one. 31:44 - Trying to work out if his complement to her band was ‘wail’ or ‘whale’. 34:56 - Babe-raham Lincoln. 46:48 - I love drums. Wish I could play. 59:35 - Sweet dispenser on the roof of the car. 1:03:23 - I would react like that backstage anywhere. High pitched muttering. 1:06:45 - “Party on, Garth.” “…I guess.” 1:16:03 - The security guard’s information bit is funny. 1:21:30 - That was an awful lot of snake. 1:25:29 - High speed U turn in a limo is awesome. 1:29:09 - “Excellent Scooby Doo ending.”
I’ve seen this plenty of times before but not for a long time, and I couldn’t really remember all that much about it. I particularly couldn’t remember what the actual story was, or if there even was one.
It’s a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed the interaction with the camera, knocking a pencil off a table to have a “secret” word. There is a story, somewhat predictable in places, but with such bizarre characters, you can’t always know where it’s going to go.
It’s the kind of film that absolutely doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that just sucks you in too.
