Title: Déjà Vu Director: Tony Scott Year: 2006 Run time: 2 hrs 6 mins
I spotted this one a while back, I can’t remember if it was 99p film of the week or somesuch, but we never quite got round to watching it. With a bit of a lull in great action films coming through on iTunes, we delved into Netflix and found this one. Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. Sold.
1:47 - Funny seeing those sailors wearing the actual outfits. 3:39 - What is it, specifically, that makes you feel like something bad is going to happen? 8:26 - Nearly ten minutes in, not sure anyone has said any actual dialogue yet. 12:11 - “Who’s in charge?” “We’re working that out.” 17:58 - Ooh, glowing gaffa tape residue. 19:44 - They confirm bodies by photos not by going down there in person? 25:32 - It’s weird seeing Val Kilmer without his pilot sunglasses on. 30:58 - “For me to have questions, I’d need to know something.” 33:58 - It’s like catch-up TV but for real life. Or maybe a plus one channel. 41:57 - Then it’s all like… are they affecting what’s happening by watching… I love it! 47:43 - Okay, that’s facial recognition on bags. 52:45 - “I don’t know how a cellphone works, I just know how to use it.” 56:30 - I’ve seen that chart on Doc Brown’s blackboard. 1:01:06 - God, that’s tough for them to just watch. 1:03:15 - It’s like a car chase scene but four days apart. 1:13:50 - Love the timey-wimey ponderings. Did they change anything? 1:17:46 - How can he ask him the questions so politely? 1:26:38 - “Just like the note, only bigger.” 1:27:03 - You can’t ever win in a time travel conversation, because there’s so many permutations. “What if I already have?” 1:42:11 - He’s a bit stupid, only just realising that everything is turning out the same way. 1:54:57 - Not exactly the same then.
I was surprised by this film for two reasons - one, that it was brilliant and two, that it had escaped my notice up until this point. A time travel style action adventure with Tony Scott at the helm and Denzel Washington on form. It was a bit slow to get started, but once it was rolling, it was so good.
The best bit about time travelling is when you see things that don’t make sense, and then gradually they all do as the story unfolds. Déjà Vu had that in spades. I’m not sure it’s one I’d watch over and over, but maybe I’ll give it another go in the future, just to see all the bits I’m bound to have missed.
