Title: The Muppet Christmas Carol Director: Brian Henson Year: 1992 Run time: 1hr 25m
I’ve loved this film for as long as I can remember, so I’m confused why I haven’t already Film Watched it. We chose it for this year’s Sidepodcast festive film club pick, so the full extent of my coverage is here, whilst this is the highlights.
0:00 - Mmm, Christmassy music. 7:00 - The cute mice, or meeces, or whatever. 9:00 - Kermit is left handed, but Scrooge is definitely right handed. 11:00 - I do agree with Mr Scrooge on this: “You keep Christmas in your own way, and let me keep it in mine.” 14:00 - I LOVE the rabbit. So cute. 21:00 - Door knockers have always kinda freaked me out. Maybe this is why. 31:00 - Boy that is one noisy clock Scrooge has. How does he ever get any sleep, even on ghostless nights? 41:00 - All speeches need an Animal, never mind that clinking of cutlery against glasses. 43:00 - “I love these Christmas parties. I love them so much, I think we’ll do them twice a year.” 46:00 - The Ghost of Christmas Present is so happy, it’s infectious. 50:00 - Scrooge laughed, then made a joke, and now he is dancing. We’re really making progress. 58:00 - Miss Piggy is an acquired taste, two mini Miss Piggy’s is quite a worrying prospect! 59:00 - Michael Caine appears to spend most of this film with tears in his eyes. 1:02:00 - When I read Harry Potter, this is how i assumed the Dementors looked. 1:05:00 - Scrooge really should recognise his own bed curtains. 1:16:00 - The Muppets are easily swayed. Years of tyranny from Scrooge, but one song and they’re over it. 1:19:00 - He’s brought turkey, but the Ghost of Christmas Present showed us they already had a goose cooking.
It has cute and/or funny muppets, great one-liners, tells the story really well and catchy songs. There’s little to complain about, it’s one of the classics that is at this point a Christmas staple. There’s little else to add, except the confusion about “The Love is Gone” being included in some versions and not in others was very irritating. It also didn’t make sense as the song is reprised at the end, but wasn’t included in our version so it didn’t make any sense. But I don’t mind because it’s not the best song on the soundtrack anyway.
