  • Tagline Alcatraz. Only one man has ever broken out. Now five million lives depend on two men breaking in.

For years Brigadier General Francis Xavier Hummel, a decorated military hero, has petitioned the United States Government to honor his men who have lost their lives in service to their country during highly covert military operations by providing their families the same benefits and tributes due other war veterans. For years his efforts have been scorned. Now, angry and determined to seek justice, Hummel and a crack team of commandos seize control of Alcatraz Island, taking hostage a group of tourists. If reparations are not immediately forthcoming, Hummel plans to launch a battery of rockets charged with lethal V.X. poison gas on the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's only hope for survival is FBI chemical/biological weapons expert, Stanley Goodspeed, and a top-secret federal prisoner, John Patrick Mason, who also happens to be the only known convict to have escaped the island fortress. With the clock ticking, this unlikely and reluctant duo, escorted by a U.S. Navy Seal team, embark on a desperate bid to infiltrate the island and detoxify the weapons before disaster strikes.

Background Info

Mr C had watched this previously and was determined that it was a good film, even though he couldn’t remember anything about it. Apple seem to be doing a good job of updating some of the older films to HD at the moment, so we’re catching up with some of the backlog. I didn’t know anything about this one until we pressed play.

2:47 - Epic rain. 4:33 - He’s from Scrubs! Cool! 6:02 - There’s an awful lot happening in this film already and I don’t really know what it’s all about. 8:38 - “Why don’t you just spend thirteen dollars on a CD?” Oh dear. 12:28 - That’s more than just an interesting day at work!! 14:03 - A lot can happen in seven and a half seconds. 16:04 - I would never, ever go in a cell on an island, no matter how great the tour was. 21:37 - I like a film that is based on the whole premise of going Rogue. 25:36 - Working for the FBI has some disadvantages, they know where you are all the time. 28:31 - It’s a bit like Silence of the Lambs. 29:31 - Disinvent doesn’t sound right. 36:30 - “Grunge?” 40:40 - You can’t cut long hair with clippers, can you? 43:05 - This music is just like Pirates of the Caribbean. 45:07 - Not a great car chase, I must say. 48:22 - Plenty of flames though, definitely Michael Bay. 53:48 - I like him saying “you wrecked half the city!” Rarely is there comeuppance on these chase scenes. 59:00 - Part of me wonders whether someone who has given his life to fighting for his country could really go ahead and kill so many of his fellow citizens. 1:04:58 - Awesome shot, them rising out of the water with their guns raised. 1:06:40 - Mmm, it’s so Tomb Raider. 1:15:37 - He didn’t even want to kill those in the shower room, why would he want to launch the rockets? 1:23:09 - I didn’t think guns were waterproof. 1:25:58 - “Okay, yea, that’s just about the most awful thing I’ve ever seen.” The shooting at toes I agree with. 1:31:20 - Marine hand signals are awesome. 1:33:10 - What is all this stuff under the buildings?? Railways and buckets and water. 1:37:47 - A guest of Alcatraz. Guest!! 1:38:58 - He does seem a bit more mental now, I could almost believe he is getting towards terrorism. Almost. 1:44:27 - Sean Connery thinks what I think. 1:47:45 - It’s good to hear the bad guys questioning it at least. 1:55:01 - Mr C did ponder the niceness of the others. Looks like we are all right! 1:59:12 - Now he’s running with the green stuff? Not smart. 2:02:32 - They seem to have found lots of unique ways to kill people. It’s like Final Destination. 2:10:13 - “A body can vapourise?”

For another long film, I actually really enjoyed it. The island concept is great, there’s always something about islands that I find intriguing. The dialogue was great, the story fab and characterisations also good to watch unfold.

My biggest complaints were the car chase which was rubbish and the scene with the daughter which was equally bad. They could have cut that out and shortened the movie to a more manageable length.

I was also a bit annoyed at how obvious it was the main bad guy didn’t really want to pull the trigger, but how the ending came about made it worth the frustration.
