Nell, Simon, and their boy Art are ready to welcome friends and family for what promises to be a perfect Christmas gathering. Perfect except for one thing: everyone is going to die.
|4:27||Bit early for blood on the carrots.|
|5:59||What is all this spitting on wounds?|
|12:15||“You love Fanta, darling.” “Do I?”|
|15:37||There is a significant difference between 15 and 20.|
|17:38||One potato each? Outrageous!|
|24:00||“It’s not a plan. It’s a disaster.”|
|29:45||That doll was already creepy and then it also talks like her!|
|35:14||That’ll be the new question, right, what would be the last film you’d watch if you had the choice?|
|53:50||“Life isn’t fair, Art.” “That’s what people say when they don’t want to find a solution.”|
|1:09:51||A little death cheers with Coke.|
|1:18:44||I thought the twisters must be poisonous, part of the same weather system and all.|
|1:20:13||Also not going out to Michael Buble. Think again.|
Well this is a tricky little number isn’t it?
Firstly, we had to time it right. It’s clearly a Christmas film but it’s not at all festive, so I didn’t want to be watching it on Christmas day with a box of Celebrations on my lap. This was our final Christmas movie of the 2021 season and it fitted perfectly for the day after Boxing Day.
So then, what is it? It’s a black comedy, for sure, and a lot of the humour lies in being at a tricky family gathering without the trouble of consequences, so there’s a big battle between British politeness and not giving a hoot about tomorrow. There are some great performances in there, particularly Keira who does frantic trying-to-keep-it-all-together host really well, and Matthew who gradually lets his frustrations show as the night wears on.
And then we’ve got the apocalypse story and that’s where it gets difficult. I really, really wish that last moment didn’t happen. Without that, it’s a great tale of preparing for the end that we created, the unfairness and inequality even when dying for the consequences of our own actions and the world carrying on without us.
But with that final snap of eyelids… it becomes a tale of not believing what the government tell us, the scientists getting it wrong, that if we believe strongly enough, it will all be alright. It’s an anti-vaccination story and that ruins it. That drops it from a strong 4/5 points to 1 point in an instant. It’s an irresponsible story to have released at this time.
Of course there’s still plenty of debate afterwards - was it just the one boy or more people have woken up? Is it even going to be a habitable world anyway? Etc, etc. But by then I’ve lost interest and taken the pill myself.
