I wasn’t expecting to like this. In my head, I feel like I’ve had mixed responses to Guy Ritchie’s gangster-style work and I wasn’t sure this was going to be any good. I was so wrong. I loved it! Hugh Grant is incredible in this, slimy and sneaky, but bouncing so well off Charlie Hunnam’s implacable, quiet and stern character.
Between them, they’re telling the story of all these shady characters and business-people screwing each other over, and it’s firstly a great way to show the action and secondly, a very interesting story. I like the way it dips back and forth, filling in the gaps until you’re up to date for the big showdown.
My only real complaint is the volume of swearing - that particular word isn’t a favourite and although you can get away with it once or twice, it just didn’t seem realistic to be uttered quite so much in so short a space of time.
