Hmm, conflicted on this one. Overall, I think liked it but that comes with a heck of a lot of caveats. The good is that the acting was top notch, it was a well crafted movie, and the story revealed itself quite well. I can see the hand of Gillian Flynn all over it. Everything that happened was important to the story, nothing was throwaway. But there were a few things that annoyed me.

This was not the film I was expecting it to be, although in hindsight, knowing it came from Ron Howard, I probably should have been thinking along these lines. It gets off to a slow start and the brothers are very frustrating to the point you just want to bang their heads together. There’s a lot of testosterone flying around and the women aren’t particularly treated very well. Lots of punching and ego and blah.

Predator 2

I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to this movie, what with it being a sequel (eek) to a very popular action movie. But hey, it was surprisingly good. Not as good as the first, but decent, amusing in places, tense in others. Good characters, an interesting story, and it got to that fabled point - how on earth are they going to get out of this one? Well, the answer is: terribly.

So, my goodness. This is a flawed but very, very fun film. I’ll be honest and admit that at about 18 minutes we were very much considering the twenty minute rule. But it gradually got better and better and I got more and more invested. It’s an odd cast, some very talented people but do they all fit together? I don’t know. And my word, the accents. If it wasn’t for people missing their accents all the time, this would for sure be a five star film.

Obviously I knew the main plot points and how it all unravelled but it was still really fascinating to see how they worked through it on the screen. It worked pretty well. I wonder if I wouldn’t have struggled a little to start with, it felt quite confusing despite me already knowing the plot, but it soon settled down into a good unpredictable thriller.

John Wick: Chapter 2

John Wick: Chapter 2

These movies are so good because they’re like James Bond but without all the other crap that goes along with being Bond. Fun locations, spy games, lots of action and the occasional bit of humour. But no misogyny, no having to bother about the politics, and not a whole lot of talking really.

John Wick

We spent quite a lot of time going, ooh Matrix and ooh Speed, but actually, this film did seem to avoid most of the normal action cliches. He spent the whole time looking for this guy and then eventually dispatched him with just a couple of gunshots. And it was quite fun how cars seemed to be his nemesis. He could fight a hundred people at once, but got hit by at least three cars.

Taken 2

Fun in places, but ultimately disappointing. It was noticeably tamer than the previous version - although in some senses that was a good thing! There was a lot less story, with the film sailing on knowledge of the characters from the first movie, and not bothering to expand on them at all. I liked that the daughter got to be a bit kick-ass rather than the one being abducted, but in the end, it was just forgettable.

The A-Team

I don’t know how die-hard A-Team fans feel about this, but it certainly didn’t ruin anything for me. The relationship between the guys was amazing, and even though I got a tiny bit confused in the middle of the story (hush up Mr C, please), it really didn’t matter. The CGI was amazing, all those fireworks and the containers at the end. And I STILL can’t believe he said Call of Duty. Just brilliant.

The Day of the Triffids

The Day of the Triffids

It’s an interesting concept, but I’m not 100% sure the story held up throughout. I would be more intrigued to find out how the world continued with everyone blind - how did they survive, how did they go about bringing up the non-blind youngsters? How did the people get off the lighthouse island to send word about the sea water? Anyway, good but not great.
