The Pelican Brief

This was a really good one. I’ve read the book but couldn’t remember anything about it so it was presented as a brand new thriller to me. Julia Roberts was excellent and I love Denzel so that was just a dream team of casting. The story is Grisham at his best, although I have to admit to get a bit confused with the sheer volume of bad guys and there were a handful of questions I had at the end that they tried to explain but I still didn’t quite get.

The Hustle

This was such a disappointment. Putting two great women together like this should work out with a great movie, but it just didn’t work from start to finish. It took too long to get them together, and then they were enemies rather than working together to con someone which would have been far more fun.

Zodiac

I had a sudden desire to watch a detective movie, so searched for a list of the best and this one popped up. I’d never heard of it, and it seems like it should be more famous than it is - it’s got a tremendous cast and tells an interesting story.

Basic Instinct

Quite liked this one, although I did think it went on a bit. I liked the whodunit at the heart of it, the mystery and the guessing game of who could possibly have done such terrible things. I wasn’t convinced by Michael Douglas’ off-the-rails cop and how quickly he fell for this woman. As if his job means literally nothing to him, he didn’t even think twice.

Backdraft

Backdraft

This was not the film I was expecting it to be, although in hindsight, knowing it came from Ron Howard, I probably should have been thinking along these lines. It gets off to a slow start and the brothers are very frustrating to the point you just want to bang their heads together. There’s a lot of testosterone flying around and the women aren’t particularly treated very well. Lots of punching and ego and blah.

The Girl on the Train

Obviously I knew the main plot points and how it all unravelled but it was still really fascinating to see how they worked through it on the screen. It worked pretty well. I wonder if I wouldn’t have struggled a little to start with, it felt quite confusing despite me already knowing the plot, but it soon settled down into a good unpredictable thriller.

National Treasure

This film is everything that the Da Vinci Code should have been. It has a great story, lots of puzzles and intrigue, and as mentioned above, is very Tomb Raider. Nicholas Cage is also very endearing, and the girl isn’t annoying, so big thumbs up from me.
