Batman & Robin

Batman & Robin

I liked the women in the movie, Poison Ivy is an excellent foe, basically channelling Mother Nature who wants her revenge. Her backstory was good. And Alicia Silverstone kicked ass, which is always fun. Unfortunately, these upsides were offset by the endless misogyny and all that pheromone nonsense. Boo. Also, what on earth was Elle’s character about? She was just kinda there and then she just kinda wasn’t.

Batman Forever

I liked the slightly more comic book approach, it suited Jim Carrey because he’s basically a comic book character in himself. Val Kilmer was probably the best of the three Batmen. Two-Face was good, and they were great as a duo together.

Batman Returns

I said it above in the notes but it bears repeating: What the hell is this film? How is it by the same people as the last one? They took the comic feel and ran with it so badly that none of it makes any sense and it is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. My biggest complaint with the film is that for a Batman movie, there is very little Batman. He’s barely in it in the first half an hour, and he’s very slow to react to all the emergencies.

Batman

It hasn’t aged particularly well, but somehow was still very entertaining. Funnier than I had expected. I loved Keaton’s portrayal of Batman/Wayne, kinda nerdy, and really not a superhero - very much just a guy in a suit with some fancy gadgets. It was relatable. If you had lots of money and an unfeasibly loyal butler.

The LEGO Movie 2

I was nervous about watching this film because I vividly remember the first one being overwhelming and exhausting. It’s the bright colours teamed with the volume of references (both audio and visual). This film carries on in much the same vain and was equally exhausting. It’s good, though, don’t get me wrong. The voice acting is fabulous, the meta references are wonderful and there is underneath it all a really good and sort of heartwarming story about family.

Isn't It Romantic

I was ready to watch this film the moment I saw Rebel and Adam were in it, they are so good together. I was, perhaps, slightly nervous because, apart from Big, the concept of out-of-body alternative universe movies doesn’t really appeal to me (the Freaky Fridays and 13 Going On 30s of this world). Maybe I’ve judged them too harshly, or maybe this was a particularly good one, but I really enjoyed it.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

I wasn’t blown away by the first movie of this series, but the dragon was cute and the voice-cast good so the second one was worth a go. I kinda wish I hadn’t. It was all fine, interesting enough story, the odd funny moment and Toothless was being much cuter in this one.

Shrek 2

I think this movie is better than the first one, and it’s nice to have the solid foundation of Fiona and Shrek as a couple (albeit a foundation that is given a test during this story). My brain being a bit fuzzy from illness, I actually found it quite hard to follow the layers of potions on top of potions, but if you just go with it, it’s quite a lot of fun.

How to Train Your Dragon

People love this movie, and it’s good but I have to admit I wasn’t completely blown away by it all. There was some underlying flaws which irritated (the kid was obsessed with being as good as the others but didn’t bother trying to get fitter or anything? And why didn’t the dragons just fly away from the massive dragon they were all scared of? What was keeping them there?).

The Christmas Chronicles

We’re totally on board with the Netflix Christmas Universe and were happy to settle in for another relatively cheesy movie about kids and Santa and Christmas. This was a complete revelation - it was brilliant! I knew we were in for a better than expected time when it became clear these were two child actors who could actually act and weren’t going to be annoying.
