Widows

Hmm, conflicted on this one. Overall, I think liked it but that comes with a heck of a lot of caveats. The good is that the acting was top notch, it was a well crafted movie, and the story revealed itself quite well. I can see the hand of Gillian Flynn all over it. Everything that happened was important to the story, nothing was throwaway. But there were a few things that annoyed me.

Backdraft

Backdraft

This was not the film I was expecting it to be, although in hindsight, knowing it came from Ron Howard, I probably should have been thinking along these lines. It gets off to a slow start and the brothers are very frustrating to the point you just want to bang their heads together. There’s a lot of testosterone flying around and the women aren’t particularly treated very well. Lots of punching and ego and blah.

Batman Forever

I liked the slightly more comic book approach, it suited Jim Carrey because he’s basically a comic book character in himself. Val Kilmer was probably the best of the three Batmen. Two-Face was good, and they were great as a duo together.

Obviously I knew the main plot points and how it all unravelled but it was still really fascinating to see how they worked through it on the screen. It worked pretty well. I wonder if I wouldn’t have struggled a little to start with, it felt quite confusing despite me already knowing the plot, but it soon settled down into a good unpredictable thriller.

John Wick: Chapter 2

These movies are so good because they’re like James Bond but without all the other crap that goes along with being Bond. Fun locations, spy games, lots of action and the occasional bit of humour. But no misogyny, no having to bother about the politics, and not a whole lot of talking really.

Dangerous Minds

Interesting one, this. It’s a good film, interesting plot and all squeezed in to a relatively short running time. I do feel a bit uncomfortable that it has the “white saviour” issue, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, in that respect. For the most part, the kids just needed a bit of a push and they did the rest themselves. That headmaster though, rage!

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D.

Ah, I was looking forward to this. I knew it wasn’t going to be epic, you could tell from the concept and the trailer, but it looked like it might hold its own and hey, Ryan Reynolds! But no, it was unwatchable. We gave it a chance through some really dodgy CGI, through the setup which was just a badly done Men in Black, and then through some unintelligible conversation about curry.

Taken 2

Fun in places, but ultimately disappointing. It was noticeably tamer than the previous version - although in some senses that was a good thing! There was a lot less story, with the film sailing on knowledge of the characters from the first movie, and not bothering to expand on them at all. I liked that the daughter got to be a bit kick-ass rather than the one being abducted, but in the end, it was just forgettable.

The A-Team

The A-Team

I don’t know how die-hard A-Team fans feel about this, but it certainly didn’t ruin anything for me. The relationship between the guys was amazing, and even though I got a tiny bit confused in the middle of the story (hush up Mr C, please), it really didn’t matter. The CGI was amazing, all those fireworks and the containers at the end. And I STILL can’t believe he said Call of Duty. Just brilliant.

Kick-Ass

For a little while, I was a bit concerned about the excess swearing, because I always feel there’s no need for language every three words. However, the longer the film went on, the more it seemed to fit, and I could just go with it. I loved just how unconventional the entire thing was, from the very simple premise, to the twists and turns, to the controversial aspects. The title is the only thing that bugs me, but the sequel is going to be worse!
