I joined Pinterest recently. I know this isn’t groundbreaking news, finally signing up to a social network that’s been around since 2010. I tried signing up once before but they didn’t have my preferred username so I had to go away and sulk about that for a bit.
Pinterest, in my limited experience, appears to be one of those social networks that is different things to different people. I can’t see myself getting a huge amount of use out of it, as fun as it is to browse screenshots from film and TV, and ogle cute pandas. I can see how it would be very handy for creative types, and businesses.
It would have been handy a few weeks ago when I was looking for a new coat. Not being of the fashionable sort, I didn’t really know where to look for inspiration, and so just hit the shops and hoped for the best. I’m happy with what I came back with, but if I’d have stopped my sulking just a bit sooner, I could have browsed through Pinterest for ideas.
Whilst on that trip, I saw a shop using Pinterest as a new angle on marketing – highlighting one pair of sparkly trousers as the most pinned item that month. That didn’t particularly entice me to buy but it did impress me. Then I signed up to the site and since then I’ve got lost in rabbit holes of Pitch Perfect quotes and tiny piglet pictures.
Overall, my conclusion is Pinterest is good for creativity, perhaps less good for productivity. Here’s a link to my profile with a sub-par username, if you want to find me over there.
