The chaps in charge of Tomb Raider these days, Square Enix, have in their infinite wisdom released the first installment of the game for iOS devices for just 69p.
I was always more of a fan of Tomb Raider 2, but getting access to any of the early games has been tricky of late. Now, the game that made Lara Croft famous has been released for next to nothing and it looks great!
The controls are awful, I mean they always were, but they are even worse on the iPad. I find it impossible to turn a corner in one smooth movement, it’s more of a 32 point turn instead. But, really, this isn’t about the gameplay, it’s about the nostalgia.
Plenty of people suggest the iPad is for casual gaming, as compared to the more hefty and immersive experience provided by Playstations and Xboxes. I’d agree with that, which makes tablets the perfect destination for ye olde games – you don’t want to take it too seriously, you’ve likely played it before, but my word, when you hear that menu screen music, you get shivers down your spine.
It’s also a win-win for the developers, because these games are past their best and set to be replaced by bigger and better things, but they can still raise a penny or two from the back catalogue.
My only complaint, and something I had forgotten, is the lack of traditional Lara “A-ha” in the first game. She doesn’t say anything when she finds something… what’s that all about?
