Your Doctor Who spin off

Doctor Who is crazy popular, and has managed to create an entire universe of TV shows, books, comics, games, and much more. It even has a couple of spin-offs with Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures. Thing is, both of those spin offs are all very well and good, but I can think of a couple of other characters who would be much more interesting.

Here’s the game. If you could select five Doctor Who characters to get their own TV show, who would you pick and why? You can’t choose the Doctor, obviously, and the companions are out of bounds too. That means no Rose or Donna, and I suppose it means no Wilf. That’s crazy talk because we all know Wilf needs his own show but alas, for this, he is not eligible.

I’d love to hear what you think, but for now, here are mine (careful of spoilers if you haven’t seen everything new Doctor Who).

  1. Elton and Ursula from Love & Monsters. The pair already had a predeliction for all things alien, and having experienced first hand the damage that can be done, I can imagine they would continue the Doctor’s work in fine form. I think there is something appealing to having the partnership of a full body human and a face in a paving stone. It would cause some interesting problems, but she could be the brains and he could be the rest.
  2. Jenny from The Doctor’s Daughter. Ooh, I didn’t like her to start with but by the end of that episode I desperately didn’t want her to go. It’d be great to follow her travels as she tried to live up to her “dad’s” reputation. She was funny and fiesty and so full of energy that it would be a fabulous show to watch. Plus, I think she should have to do that cool somersaulting thing through lasers in every episode.
  3. The Adipose from Partner’s in Crime. I know they were more on the alien side of the fence but the poor little baby adipose never meant anyone any harm, and they were so cute! If a little squelchy. I’m not sure what they could do in their spin off show, other than travel the world in search of another nanny, but as long as they waved a few times, I’d be happy.
  4. Madame de Pompadour from The Girl in the Fireplace. It would be a great juxtaposition to have the pomp and circumstance of 18th century France alongside aliens and science fiction for a full length series rather than just one episode. I know they time travelled to the end of her story, but perhaps she got up to lots of fun stuff while she was waiting for the Doctor. That way he could keep popping up in the story as well. A couple of cameos from Mr Tennant would go down well.
  5. The Part Human Doctor from Journey’s End. Ha! This way I get to keep David Tennant but it’s not actually the Doctor and it’s not a companion and therefore it doesn’t break any of the rules. I’m assuming that he can do the fun stuff the Doctor does and we can see how he copes with being a human at the same time, presumably trying to create a life with Rose. Ooh, I get to keep Rose as well! This means we can have the Eleventh Doctor doing his thing, and still get to see yummy DT at the same time. Everyone is happy.

So, there you have it. There are loads more I could have chosen, but these are my top five, for now. I’d love to hear yours. I think I already know who Lukeh’s number one will be, but we shall see!

  1. No Wilf?!! Nooooooo!! I’d give the man his own TV station let alone spin off! Alas, I’ll take your rules into consideration, and here’s my outcome…

    1. Sally Sparrow from Blink – Easily my favoute non-Wilf, non companion character in the show. she was just awesome and she did an awesome job in Blink despite there being so little Doctor in the episode, which is odd considering it’s one of the best episodes. She could do an awesome show though as a spin off, tracking clues of the Doctor maybe in the same way she did with Blink. She could always find Wilf and they could help out.

    2. Joan Redfern and John Smith – Aha!! In the same way you have managed to keep the Doctor in via a twist of the rules, I have done so as well πŸ™‚ The Human Nature/Family of Blood two parter was an awesome set of episodes, plus I’m a big fan of Jessica Hynes as it is and she did such a good job as the nurse that the Doct.. I mean, John smith fell for. They just had such a wonderful chemistry between them and I think it would be fascinating to see how the story between the two would work as a spin off. I’m sure a young Wilf might be able to get involved.

    3. Story of the Ood – The Ood are probably one of Russell T Davies’ best moments concerning making new species within the Doctor Who universe and it’s amazing how the perception of them has changed as the new series has developed. Initially they didn’t really appeal to me but as you learnt their story more and got to know them, whilst not being overused as allies or enemies for the Doctor, they definitely got a lot of sympathy from me and I would *love* to see a spin off following the story of the Ood. It goes to show how important they were/are within the show seeing as RTD used them as the major plot point to the demise of the 10th Doctor and giving out the warning signs. They are an oddly… oodly lovable race. Perhaps they could become friends with Wilf?

    4. Madame Pompadour – Now I hate to copy your choice Christine but madame pompadour’s story with the Doctor was adorable. Again, Girl in the Fireplace was a wonderful episode (once again written by Stephen Moffat, bit of a pattern with my choices) but also strikingly tragic in the way it portrayed Madame pompadour waiting throughout her life for the Doctor to show up when she clearly knew what he had about him. A spin off involving her and her story with the Doctor over the years would be fascinating and as you say, a few cameos from David Tennant would be awesome! I’m not sure how I can get Wilf into this situation.

    5. Davros and the Daleks – Now, bare with me. The Daleks have been *horribly* overused by Russell T Davies but a spin off involving Davros’ various forms over the past 30 years (preferrably the more modern Davros though) and his relationship with the Daleks, his methods of tracking down the Doctor and I’m sure his many appearances on Dalek TV would be pretty awesome. Davros is *the* enemy for the Doctor in my opinion and it could be a total juxtaposition of a show compared to Doctor Who, which would be an interesting scenario. But yeah, Davros is totally awesome, and I’d love to see more of that scary face. Wilf could probably commentate on the DVD commentary.

so that’s my choices. There were a few you mentioned I was concering like the couple from Love and Monster but the absorbaloff totally put me off – it was a good episode but yeesh, what was going on with that idea. Also wanted to mention the… aliens suffering with flatulence from Aliens of London, which is hands down the worst episode of modern Doctor Who, just so I can find out how on earth they managed to have a system that does that all the time. Oh how I love Doctor Who πŸ™‚

  2. How about an opinion from a stranger? Here are our picks

    1. Sally Sparrow & her friend’s brother. They clearly have something going on, good chemistry, and a base of operations that is moderately high tech- well, digital, at least- and they could find other clues in Easter eggs on DVDs that the Dr. Left behind. Who knows?

    2. Part human Dr. & Rose. I would be ecstatic to see Billie & David together again.

    3. The Next Doctor & Rosita. What fun that could be! Especially if they were to team up with Holmes, as they would be compatriots. And subsequent visits from DT could help them with the truly difficult or otherworldly scenarios.

    4. The building and growth of Torchwood after Queen Victoria founded it. (And why didn’t the Torchwood gang figure out that she is a werewolf?) Perhaps we could see some of the early adventures of Jack. ’cause it sure wouldn’t be bad for fans or ratings for him to show up occasionally.

    5. River Song and her little Tardis-shaped book of spoilers would be a fascinating basis for a spin-off. And we could find out what she did to be in that prison! Oh look, another chance for a guest spot or twenty by DT.

    Always welcome πŸ™‚

River Song and her little Tardis-shaped book of spoilers would be a fascinating basis for a spin-off.

That’s a great idea. It would spin out the mystery a little longer too.
