Helena Bonham Carter on BBC Four

Sweeney Todd star, Helena Bonham Carter, is making the transition from big screen to small to play children’s author Enig Blyton in a one-off drama about the popular writer. The show will also star Matthew Macfadyen and Denis Lawson.

Blyton remains one of the most popular author’s for young children despite having been published for almost 80 years. From the adventures of the Famous Five and Secret Seven, to the fairytale lands of The Faraway Tree and Noddy, almost all children will have read or consumed something created by Enid Blyton.

Whilst book sales have reached over 500 million in 40 countries, the drama – to be shown on BBC Four later this year – will take a closer look at the stories behind the novels. Blyton lived through two world wars, struggled to be published, and led a complex personal life culminating in divorce.

Of the role, Helena says:

“It’s a long time since I have read such a well written script with as complex and fascinating a character as Enid. I hope I do her justice. And I hope I get to drink lashings of Ginger Beer.”

Carter is acclaimed for playing dark and trouble characters, so perhaps this is one show that the kids will not want to see.
